Do you know of a good subsitution for a food item in the US that isn't widely available in Australia?

American-style mayonnaise -- try S&W, Best Foods, Thomy, Soya
Graham crackers -- try using digestive biscuits

I haven't tried this, but...

Hidden Valley Ranch Buttermilk Dressing Mix
Posted by Cookin'Mom at recipegoldmine.com

15 saltine crackers
2 cups dry parsley
1/2 cup dry minced onion
2 tablespoons dill weed
1/4 cup onion salt
1/4 cup garlic salt
1/4 cup onion powder
1/4 cup garlic powder
Put crackers through blender on high speed until powdered. Add parsley, minced onion and dill weed - blend again until powdered. Add onion salt, garlic salt, onion powder, and garlic powder.
Put into a container with a tight fitting lid. You can store this dry mixture at room temperature for up to 1 year.
Directions
To mix dressing, combine 1 tablespoon dry mix with 1 cup mayonnaise and 1 cup buttermilk. Whisk until smooth, chill to thicken.
Great on salad or as a dipping sauce for fresh vegetables and hot wings.

can't knock it because I haven't tried it, but WOW. it just doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well as graham cracker.

Ok so which is the best? I want to make a dip that uses mayo and I want it to taste as much like my version from home as possible.

Best Foods has always worked "best" for me when it comes to things like dips, sauces, and of course ranch dressing. But of course it depends on your tastes.

from Jan 21, 2008: Tucker Time How do you order an iced coffee?

Hi, I hate the powder (whitener) too ....no half and half, but this is what I do.

Mix the light thickened cream with some milk (I use a little more milk than cream) and keep it in a little pitcher in the fridge. Pretty darn close to half and half.

I have a food substitution I came up with at Thanksgiving time last year. I was making green bean casserole and needed the french fried onions that go in it. They don't sell those in the grocery store here the way they do back in the US. I found fried onions in the Asian food market that worked perfect. Looked nearly the same and tasted just as good :) Not sure if anyone else has tried this one, but thought I would share.

mmm fried onions ... thanks for the tip, Melissa!

btw, has anybody found a subsitute for Carnation Coffee-Mate Creamer? The powder kind... I absolutely love that stuff but haven't seen it here.

nevermind... apparently, it's released by Nestle here. I wonder why I haven't seen it on the supermarket shelves, though... :headscratch:

The Swedish Market at IKEA has a 100gm tub of "Rostad Lk" for $1.99.
They are battered and roasted onions, crumbled, and taste better to me than the Asian fried onions/shallots.
I use them for topping on many things!

Maybe that would explain it... I haven't stepped foot in a Woolies in ages! Ever since the whole "reduced price" moldy strawberries from about two years ago

they sell flavored creamers at woolies and coles. they are in the coffee section too, a bit pricey for a bag of 10 single serve, but its the only way i like my coffee!! i have only seen french vanilla and hazelnut. it is also made by nestle/coffee mate. i really miss getting the big box from sam's club or the flavored creamer in the dairy section!

The Best Foods Mayonnaise in my local Woolies says it was made in Canada. Most likely why it tastes like the American stuff;)

My husband's from Utah and I am from Texas and we laughed one day when we realized that Hellman's and Best Foods were the same company. We were singing the jingles and realized they were the same and the jars looked similar. At least, that was our assumption.

You weren't wrong, they are the same company. Hellmann's is known as Best Foods west of the Rockies.
