$
Cafe Pinnacle
right outside the Woolies in Casuarina Square, Casuarina (Darwin)

It's a typical take-away establishment, but their homemade steak pies are TO DIE FOR. Seriously. smile We go there often and have gotten to know the owners, who are really nice. They have 1/2 price pies after 5 on weekdays and after 3 on weekends.

$$
The Cool Spot
Fannie Bay Shops, Fannie Bay (Darwin)

A really nice contemporary eatery with a retro-type atmosphere, crowded on the weekends but otherwise great place...LOVE the ice cream!

$$
Fannie Bay Super Pizza

right next to The Cool Spot in Fannie Bay Shops, Fannie Bay (Darwin)
This place has that classic pizzeria look right down to the red checkered tablecloths, and their pizza is AWESOME. Lots of interesting toppings. Highly recommended!

$$
Cafe Kashmir

Nightcliff Shops next to Video 2000, Nightcliff (Darwin)
The owners are some of Kirk's mobile customers and we've gotten take-away from them a few times. VERY good homemade Indian food.

$$$
Nirvana
Smith Street near the Daly St. intersection, Darwin CBD

OK, if you want to go out to a really nice restaurant in Darwin and you like Thai, Indian, or Malaysian food...this is the place. They have a really nice candlelit atmosphere and live entertainment on Tuesdays. A full bar too. Highly recommended!

Here are my picks:

Classic Curry Co.
597 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne
$
Probably one of the best curry places around, and really cheap! Rice is included when you purchase a curry, and it costs an average of $8.50 for a curry. They also have naan, paratha, and some yummy desserts for $4 and under each. They're open almost every day for lunch and dinner, and there's a decent amount of parking available in the evenings. The only downside: They only take cash, so you'll need to drop by an ATM on your way. Trust me, though...it's worth it!

Choix Creperie Cafe
620 Collins Street (down Liberty Lane), Melbourne
$
Hands down the best kept secret in the CBD! This place makes the most delicious crepes around, both sweet and savoury. (I recommend the savoury one with goat's cheese, spinach, and roasted capsicum!) They also do sandwiches and coffee, but the crepes are the best! The crepes average at around $7.50 each, and are plenty big for lunch. They're open until 4:30 Monday to Friday. Be careful when trying to find the place, though. The old saying, "If you blink, you'll miss it!" definitely applies to this place! It is TINY, so you need to keep an eye out for it when walking down Liberty Lane.

Koko Black
167 Lygon Street, Carlton
http://www.kokoblack.com/

$$
I just discovered the wonder that they call Koko Black recently, and I've craved it ever since! It is nothing but chocolate! They have the yummiest displays of truffles and other chocolates downstairs, or you can sit down, have a cup of hot or iced chocolate (the best in the world!) and choose from one of the sinfully delicious chocolate desserts on their menu. The amount you get for your money is rather small, but trust me...if you're a chocolate lover, it is worth every penny! My recommendation: Go every so often. It's nice to be able to crave it...not to mention nicer on your bank account! There are two other locations around Melbourne, but the Lygon Street location is probably the most fun!

This is a post on the AMSOC messageboards found here, but since that's not a perma-link, I'll quote the whole thing:

Quote:

While I was getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist here in Sydney a few years ago I noticed the dental assistants name was Rosario. Being from San Diego and craving GOOD Mexican food, I asked her where she was from. When she said she was from Mexico and her husband worked for the Mexican Embassy, I was elated!
I first asked my new best friend Rosario how many Mexicans were living in Australia and she confidently told me there were only 750 in Australia. "Extrodinary" was my first thought since that was the same amount I thought that lived in a small two bedroom appartment in East L.A.

Next I got down to the question that really counted and I asked Rosario through my dental mask with a barley understandable mumble, "Where is the best Mexican food in Australia." Rosario said matter of factly, "There is only one place that Mexicans go and that is. . . Aztecas in Randwick.

After I received the news I felt a sense of enlightenment come over me. Once I departed the denist and my new savior Rosario, I couldn't wait for the numbness to leave the left side of my face and that night I raced over to Aztecas. Once there I noticed about half of all the Mexicans in Australia sitting at one table. All 325 of them there in one place, what a site to behold! I couldn't help but shout, "Ole!"

Jose, the owner, was passing out sombraros and playing guitar and singing traditional Mexican songs. He also played traditional Beatle songs with a traditional Mexican accent. Wow, this was truely heaven in Randwick! I had finally arrived in the promised land!

"Okay", I thought, "This place has potential." The menu was promising and it offered all the classics including more than one kind of Mexican beer. OLE!

I went for the basic taco and burrito with a Dos Equis Amber. When it arrived I was not dissapointed. To be honest it was not as good as the 2 am burritos you get in San Diego from the little stand on the corner for $2.50 but I'd rate this place a solid "7" if I was eating in America.

This is the best place I've been to in Sydney for Mexican food. Cafe Pacifico is a bit more expensive, niether is cheap, and is not as good as Aztecas, although I really like the rolled tacos and chips and salsa at Cafe Pacifico better than Aztecas.

Aztecas also offers imported mexican spices and sauces for sale which really come in handy and Jose is a legend!

Give this place a try, I think you'll like it.

For anyone looking for Mexican in Perth

Acapulco Annie's located NOR in Tuart Hill $$$ (better/cheaper than Garcia's, which appears to be one of the only other Mexican restaurants in WA!)

We went there for the 4th of July (a bit off, but it had been months since I had Mexican!) and I was very pleasantly surprised. The mains were $15-20, but honestly all you can eat (I took half of my beef and frijole burrito home with me), and they had a 2 for 1 cocktail special going on Tues nights. The food wasn't as good as home, but still quite tasty (and they used shredded beef). Their sangria was delicious and the pure entertainment of watching my Au counterparts try to order Mexican food was worth every cent (my husband was good, as he had already heard words like quesadilla and fajita pronounced correctly in my hometown...but my inlaws and friends were another story!).

All the restaurants I really love are not in the CBD or close to it really (30-45 minutes SW of CBD), so I am not sure how helpfully it will be. If we ever eat in Brisbane I will post again!

A Taste of Texas
Shop 49, 91 Middle Street, Cleveland
$$$
This place is great when I am craving something familiar and homy. They have a bit of Mexican and TexMex. I prefer their TexMex but the mexican is better than any I have had in Australia, so far. Plus they have really good ranch dressing and Hot wings! The restaurant is normally pretty quiet. And since it is on Middle Street there is always parking close. It is a bit hard to find, but just look up for the flags (Mexico, US, Australia) and the blue hand rail. Also it is a BYO.

Bellisimo Pizza Pasta and Ribs
Shop 5 / 190 Birkdale Road, Birkdale QLD
$$
The pizza here is great! They really pile on the fresh toppings. The breads are very yummy also. The pasta seems a bit generic, but if you are really in the mood for pasta, the Chicken Cacciatore is pretty good. It is a little shop, and it always seems very busy so we also do take out or delivery.

Jaipur Palace
Shop 3 / 379 Main Road, Wellington Point
$$
Wonderful Curry. This is the first Indian restaurant I have eaten at and I am HOOKED. Everything I have tried from here has been great. Curries cost $13.90 - 14.50 ($1 more if you want seafood)this includes rice and one curry will feed both of us. The naan and samosa are very good and under $5.

La Notte
140-146 Lygon Street, Carlton
$$
This is my new favourite Italian place. They're "under old management" (in other words, they've never changed hands, which they proudly display on a sign out front), and they're great. They're also on the quieter side of Lygon Street, so parking is a bit easier. Mains run from between $10-$17 depending on what you get, but they also have a nice selection of entrees if you want a bit less food. And I have to say it...I think they have the best lasagna and bruschetta in town!

EDIT FROM 21/9: I just had to give an extra shout-out for this one. ;) Nick and I went there again tonight, and it was fantastic. I had a glass of their house red this time, and I ended up buying a bottle of it to bring home. Yum! Definitely try it if you ever go to Lygon Street.

I just got back from here, and all my taste buds can say is YUM! I didn't think it was possible to get authentic Mexican food in Australia, but I was so wrong! This place is definitely your best bet for Mexican food in Melbourne. Their mains range from $15-$20, and their meals are HUGE! They're open for dinner every day from 6:00 PM on, and it is advisable to make a booking! We got there right at opening time tonight, and the place was almost full within minutes. They're very popular...and with good reason!

That Little Mexican Place
382 Fitzgerald Street
North Perth 6006
http://www.thatlittlemexicanplace.com.au/

My husband and I tried this place a couple of weeks ago after I happened upon some reviews on www.eatingwa.com.au (good website for getting reviews of lots of restaurants in WA). It's quite a small restaurant with a cozy atmosphere. The service was wonderful. I had chicken taquitos for a starter. They were good but a bit bland for my taste. I had the steak quesadilla for main, and it was quite nice. My husband had the lamb burrito, and he was really pleased with that. For desert, I had sopapillas, and my husband had the churros. I was a bit disappointed with the sopapillas, because they weren't my idea of what sopapillas should taste like. They were flat and not light and full of air like I'm used to. The churros were totally yummy, though! I think we'll definitely be going back there again! I'd still prefer a big plate of fajitas from my favorite Tex-Mex place back in Houston, though. ;)

oh, this is rad. being from southern california myself (LA, my friend) i got used to mexican REAL quick...and love it. i found a place here in Mitcham (697 Whitehorse Road) and is owned and operated by a Mexican family (Manuel is the head). you can order your food in spanish too.

a place a little closer to my home here in blackburn claled Nachos Cantina is pretty good too...and i believe, like Taco Bill's, is a franchise...which, if you're willing to try a few, you can find a good one because being a franchise leaves it open to either a good chef that understand Mexican cuisine or a chef that just follows recipes but has no idea how it's done. so, Nachos here in Blackburn kicks ass...and i can even order our food in Spanish. the cook's name is Carlos. lol

i know in the realm of traditional Mexican style dining, Taco Bill for us that know better probably rates quite poorly. BUT...i must confess, or rather report, that i did in fact find a good one (owned and operated by an ASIAN names Leslie...he knows what he's doing) in Croydon. he also owns the one in Boronia. the rest of the Taco Bill's suck.

my wife is a chef and since meeting me, she's kind of got into the whole Mexican food thing with me, which is cool. funny how something that isn't american is a bit of home for us. lol

i'd like to try this place in richmond. you can always tell a good mexican cantina by their chips and salsa. if that's good, everything else will be superb.

Pig & Whistle Tavern & Restaurant
1429 Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, Olinda
$$$-$$$$
http://www.pigandwhistletavern.com
Nick and I just got back from dinner at this place, and I'm feeling pretty happy now. It is rather expensive (approximately $17-$30 for a main meal), but most people go up to the Dandenong Ranges for a treat anyway so it's probably not that much of a stretch. I remember hearing good things about this place from various sources, and the hype didn't disappoint. The decor is very woodsy/old English and quaint, and the food is great. (If they ask you if you want bread to start with, say yes! It's homemade and SO GOOD!) It took a bit of time for our meals to be cooked, but the waitresses were very nice and quick to serve you. One of the biggest pluses (at least on nights like tonight) is that it's fully AIR-CONDITIONED! ;) Definitely worth it if you're ever up 'round these parts!

Also like to put in a recommendation for Il Puntino at Bondi Beach (90 Campbell Parade)- their margarita pizza is the best I've ever had! I think it's the cheese.

Any other suggestions in the Sydney area?!

Misty's Diner
103-105 High Street, Prahran
http://www.mistysdiner.com.au
$$
We have had two of our Melbourne YDU Meet-Ups here, and it's always been great. Misty's offers a great selection of all our fav American dishes like the philly steak sandwich, good ol' American-style burgers, cheesy bites (which are the equivalent to fried mozzarella cheese sticks) and chili fries! (Mmmm.....the chili fries....REAL, honest to God chili, people!) She also offers a selection of American candies such as Tootsie Rolls, York Peppermint Patties, and lots of Hershey's, as well as American sodas such as A&W Root Beer, Dr. Pepper, and Cherry Coke. The service has always been fast when I've been there, and the food is really nice. The meals are all very reasonably priced ($10-$15 each), but be prepared to spend a bit there because you'll end up unintentionally stuffing yourself with all the good stuff on offer! ;)

Nyala African Restaurant
131 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
$$
Nick and I just had dinner at this place, and it is FANTASTIC! Neither of us had ever had African food before this. I'll tell ya', though...it has now replaced Indian food as my all time favourite! They specialise in Ethiopian food, and there are also dishes from other parts of Africa including Morocco and Sudan. The menu itself is pretty small, but the dishes we tried tonight were absolutely beautiful. One of the main dishes (I believe it was called Doro Tibs) was best described by Nick: "This is a taste explosion." It was a chicken and chili concoction that is too incredible to describe. Entrees average at about $8, mains average at $15, and desserts average at $6. If you're feeling adventurous or just want to try something different, definitely go to this place. You will leave the place as I did...very, very happy! ;)

theres a new NZ pizza chain has come from across the Tasman. Its called HELLS PIZZA. If anyone in the Brisbane area that lives near Darra give them a try. Awesome tasting pizza. Not greazy at all, they make their own dough. Heres the website www.hellspizza.com.au.

Funny thing is they deliver your pizza in a hearse.
Got a padded coffin to sit on at the counter while you wait too and if you got leftovers the pizzabox has a tear-out part that converts into a mini coffin for you leftover slices...lol
