It is the first time that the role of indigenous Australians has been recognised in ANZAC tradition.

It's about friggin' time, I say. :)

Why don't they just recognize them on ANZAC Day? Do they not allow them to go or they just want their own ceremony?

I think the point is that they don't.

I've heard a rumour that at the time of WW2, Aborigines were not considered to be citizens of Australia (but rather a "protected" group of people, whatever that means), so those who served in the war were not given the same compensations and recognitions as white Australians. They were not eligible for land grants, pensions, etc.

The article seems to imply that there just haven't been any recognitions whatsoever up until now, whether it be on ANZAC day or otherwise. I'm not sure why. But I'm glad they're at least doing something now. These people deserve to be recognised for their contributions to a country that doesn't seem to want to acknowledge them. :((

Hmmm
Indeed anyone and everyone that has served the country in the military should be recognized. I can't believe that they wouldn't have been recognized prior to the year 2007. When I clicked on the link to the article it didn't take me to an ANZAC article but something about the number of Aboriginal people in jail is on the rise.
I saw some program on TV the other day and they had Aboriginals that had served in the military during the war and they said the good thing about it was that other military people did not see their colour, they were sort of seen as their brothers no matter which I think was awesome.. too bad it wasn't seen that way out of the military as well.

Interesting..

I'd heard they had shorter life expectancies but I wonder why their level of heart disease is three times higher than the non-indigenous community
