Seven said yesterday it would bring TiVo to Australia next year and would make the platform available to other free-to-air broadcasters and broadband content owners. To get their service, people would need to buy a TiVo-branded set top box and pay a monthly subscription fee, although Seven said yesterday it would be a much lower fee than what Foxtel charges.

Will be interesting to see how this works out...and what the subscription fees are like...

Hmm if we did get it in Australia it would probably be neat and if it came to Darwin I would be flabbergasted since from what I skimmed over it said channel seven which we don't get on it's own :ta:

Foxtel already has essentially the same thing; it's called IQ and we've got it on our system. I would think most digital TV services will have this eventually.

Basically any show can be recorded by pushing one button and shows that you are watching can be paused and rewound, and you have a hard drive which allows you to store all of it.

We pay $15 a month for it, which is very worth it considering we only have cable on one TV and there's two TV junkies in the house who fight over it.

I love it because I use it to tape live American sports like football and golf which come on in the middle of the night.

Tam and I never fight over the TV, we just tape everything.

The big drawback is that Channel 7 and 10 are not included. We get 9 and ABC though.

That brings up an interesting question... would a US TiVo even work here? :headscratch:

Or, I suppose, you could build your own TiVo-like machine called "MythTV" like Nick and I did three years ago and use whatever TV provider and cable set-up (digital, standard, etc.) you want. ;) We can (and do) record anything on any channel we have on our cable. I haven't watched "live" TV in months!

My question is... will TiVo work on the Foxtel channels Might want to look into that before buying!

Foxtel has IQ which works on their system but does not pickup channels 7 & 10. So if channel 7 is bring out TiVO will Foxtel allow it to record Foxtel channels? I don't see them allowing it seeings how greedy the company is without getting a large piece of the pie. IF not that would make TiVo sorta of a pain since it would only pick up a few channels.

I hope some of that made sense... I still haven't had my morning coffee.

Wouldn't a converter solve the electrical differences?

A US Tivo might not download the tv guide, but you should still be able to record, and for regular shows that is easy to set manually. Just tell Tivo to record this channel, on this day, at this time and repeat this every week.

I also like my Tivo because I can download anything on my Tivo to my laptop anywhere in the world I happen to be. And my friends in Arizona will be able to download some Aussie things once I get house set up over there.

A converter may solve the voltage issue, but my question is... would a US TiVo be able to recognise Australian TV channels, given that they use different video standards? Or would that not matter? I remember there was a question about bringing one's HDTV, but it turned out to be not worth it because digital signals are dfferent, too...

HHmmm??

That's a good question. I'll do some research and let y'all know what I learn.

In the meantime... even if I can't record tv, I'm still bringing my Tivo with me. It is AWESOME for downloading movies from Amazon.

And it may be the only way I can see some of my favourite American tv shows!!

Oh Happy Day!!! :redpepper: :eggplant: :redpepper: :eggplant:

http://www.mytivo.com.au/index.html

The folks at OZ Tivo have been SO nice!!!
They tell me that their research indicates that the Tivo machine itself "should" work just fine in Australia, providing the appropriate adapters/converters are used for the electrical issues.

Since the signal comes out of the wall, into the cable box, out of the cable box, and then into Tivo, it is purely a digital signal and is recorded to the hard drive just like any digital signal is recorded to a computer hard drive.

The only thing they don't think will transfer is my lifetime service :& :arrgh: :$ oh well... I guess I'll just have to suck it up and pay for Tivo again. I can't live without my Tivo, especially now with the Amazon Unbox!!! Who cares if I won't have the tv guide on my Tivo? All I want is to be able to download my favourite American shows!!

Just thought I'd update y'all on my findings so far.

Amazon Unbox?! Never heard of it til now. Do you have to pay for TV shows? Is it like downloading shows from iTunes?

Sounds very interesting!

I was interested in Amazon Unbox, until I read about their terms of service on Boing Boing

When you sign into the service, you are giving them permission to spy on your computer, your internet connectivity, and anything else they want to know.
Quote:

The Software may also provide Amazon with information about your Authorized Device's operating system, software, amount of available disk space and Internet connectivity, such as whether your computer or other device is available online. This information will, among other things, help us deliver Digital Content to you more efficiently and effectively. The Software may also provide Amazon with information about the transfer of Digital Content to portable devices to help us ensure compliance with our rules concerning portable device...

And if you delete the software, they delete your movies.
Doesn't seem worth it to me.
