Sooo... State of Origin. Da Blues, they could've had it... they really could've... QLD gave 'em plenty of chances to score another try. But they just played like CRAP. Gah. Wanted to throw something at the TV afterwards. :arrgh:  Just had to get that out. Surely I'm not the only Blues fan here... am I? |

I went to the game. What a blast. I wore black. I have to say I was sorely disappointed with the manners of the Blues fans. There were quite a few maroons in the stands, and they were being harrassed, painted blue, and pelted with food and bottles until they eventually left. Of course, I doubt a blue shirt would be treated any better in Brisby... Audra |

For some reason, most people down here who support the Storm tend to barrack for Queensland in these things. I'm not sure why; I don't barrack for Queensland in anything. But I'm an AFL man first anyway (CARN THE DONS!) |

Probably has to do with the whole Melbourne vs Sydney rivalry. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" and all that. Jennifer - I used to watch NRL games on Fox World Sports too. |

Natalie :goodonya: is a die-hard Blues fan so I better damn well cheer for them too! She was thrilled to find a way to listen to State of Origin online last year. Not like being there, though. Can't wait to get back to Oz for true fan action and love of sports... sports have become LAME in the states! -Greg |

Man, isn't that the truth! And I'm a Packer fan! But I couldn't bear to sit through another season of NFL-television! I can't stand the commercial breaks. :arrgh: If the Pack's ahead in the 4th quarter, I might watch the final. Or I might not. |

Pro sports really have gotten boring over there. I'll still watch college football though all day. I went to a baseball game about a month ago when I was in Denver.....Coors Field is pretty nice. But the presentation was terrible....it felt like I was at a corporate picnic. EVERYTHING has a god forsaken sponsor now. I do not sleep better at night knowing this pitching change is brought to me by Texaco and this rain delay is brought to me by Mutual Life. And the other thing that absolutely drove me crazy - there's a sound byte every 10 seconds. Player comes up to bat - 10 seconds of overplayed rock tune - swings, foul ball, 10 seconds of another overplayed rock tune - swings, grounds to third base, thrown out, then some sort of public address announcement telling everyone in the crowd to pay attention to this or to that. Sometimes it would be nice to let the spectacle speak for itself. Won't even start on the steroids. While high-level sports in Australia certainly have their own problems (I find the AFL to be such an incredibly badly run organization it's not funny), I have found that there are elements that at least harken back to the way things used to be. Most players play with one team their whole career - loyalty still seems to matter. I'm a bit over the whole concept of checkbook recruiting where a mediocre player makes $7 million a year and changes teams about 11 times. I've also enjoyed the accessibility that you get here. You can go watch any AFL team practice at their home ground two days a week, and it is insanely easy to get an autograph. |

:eggplant: I love the blind wheelchair badminton championships on channel 12, or the BONER (Braeside Official Nineth Endurance Race) run-offs on channel 8. Love of the game is where it's at, no matter the sport. Sure, there's nothing like pulling on a tight pair of spandex shorts, lacing up the thigh high combat boots and rubbing cooking oil all of your chest as you get ready to hike the great outdoors, but televised team sports are really the best way to get involved with the spirt of the game of life. Actually, Cricket is the game that I'm going to study and learn. There's something about the game that intrigues me, I must admit. The whole white pants, sleaveless sweater white polo shirt thing is like watching restrauant vallet parking attendants throw ping pong balls at each other out on the back patio. I personally believe the game would be better played and greatly enhanced for viewing pleasure if you allowed a pack of wild foaming at the mouth dogs to run amuck in and amongst the players. Mix things up a little bit, make for a bit of mayhem and hearty laughs. Have any of you ever noticed that I really don't take forums seriously, ...that much? I'm sorry. I honestly have nothing against team sports, nor do I find any fault with the game of Cricket. I'm just bored here, waiting for the moving people to come get my stuff so I can get ready to fly to Australia and be with Rachael. Don't mind me.....I'll grow up one day...I promise. |
