Hi guys,

I am actually in Esperance right now doing farm prac but I got a question. My boyfriend has never been to the US and we are thinking of doing a big trip in 2008.

Question is...would it be better to take an Aussie for a cold Christmas season and tour with snow etc? Or in the summer? He is not sure which he would like better or exactly what he would like to see...I would of course like to show him everything, but I cannot...so suggestions??? He did just mention about how cool it would be to see a space shuttle launch in Florida...so I got something to run with.

Other suggestions from Aussies who have never gone is MArdi Gras, Yellowstone, and that is it so far. Hmmmmmmm....the possibilities.

Hey Stiny,

I think spending Christmas in the States would be a great idea! Take him someplace where there's snow and do all the wintery holiday traditions - build a fire, bundle up, make snowmen, etc. NYE in NYC is a really good idea too!

Or if you come in the summer, take him to a waterpark! There aren't many in Oz... the only ones I know of are at Dreamworld in QLD.

And there's always Vegas, Disneyland, Walt Disney World... or hey, just go on a road trip and see the sights along the way.

These are all the things I would love to do with my husband when we go back, definitely when the kids are older... :)

I'm from NY, and though I've never gone into the city to watch the ball drop on NYE, I do think it's definitely one of those life experiences that you'll never forget. Here's a link that might be helpful:

The holiday season in NY is really special. There's just something in the air, and I really believe experiencing it is seeing NYC at its best.

Have fun, whatever you decide!

i've never been to nyc either but i'd LOVE to go there and bring my h2b someday. so much to do there! just think about all the lights and the big tree and ice skating in central park.. it'd be romantic i think. but i love big cities

otherwise i'd say disneyworld. haven't been there in ages but i LOVE it! though again, i personally love amusement parks and there is a lot to do there

i have to say though my fiance came to the states during winter and hated it. and he's not much of a fan of summer and the heat. but i think that's because i live in wisconsin and there isn't much to do here and i was working heaps and he was basically shelled up in my house haha. but i'd love him to come here for our summer next. go rent a cottage on the lake, summer festivals and concerts, great america, campfires our eating dinner outdoors, etc.,.

I'm not much for crowds myself, I enjoy more "scenery" things. I would suggest a trip up the Pacific Northwest. My inlaws visited in us in the US in 2002 and loved seeing Crater Lake, and the Cascade Mountains. We visited Mt. Hood, Multnomah Falls, and the Columbia Gorge. They loved it all as it was so different from what they've seen. There are heaps of hiking trails and you can walk up Multnomah Falls.

I hope you have a great time whatever you choose!

The biggest bitch about having a holiday in the winter is that the days are so short, the nights can be a bit dull.

If you can do a few different cities, I would design a trip that highlights how very diverse the states can be. Most Australian towns are fundamentally the same...and although I knwo there are thousands of varieties, I think once you've seen one gum tree...

My dream itinerary would definitely include Key West, New Orleans, The Big Texan (outside of Amarillo, TX - where if you can eat a 72 oz steak and all the trimmings in an hour, it is free), Santa Fe, Moab (go rafting if you can), Las Vegas (just for the ugly spectacle of the place), Lake Tahoe (with a side trip to see the Giant Sequoias) San Francisco (with a side trip to the Redwoods - lots of Aussies have told me how incredible they thought redwoods are, and I would have to agree.) A hop across the border into Mexico is always worth it, just for the cheap tequila. The Columbia Gorge is spectacular. The Rocky Mountains unequalled.

Clearly, I am biased towards the west, but if you are not the outdoorsy type, New York, DC, Boston, and Philadelphia would certainly be educational...

Fun, fun!

The Big Texan (outside of Amarillo, TX - where if you can eat a 72 oz steak and all the trimmings in an hour, it is free),

Great suggestions Audra! And I had to quote on The Big Texan. One of my closest friends is from the Amarillo area (Vega, to be exact....just about 30 miles west of Amarillo) and has taken me there a few times. If the 72 oz steak doesn't blow your mind, the sheer size of the meal you order will....at least it did for me. Sort of puts that saying that "Everything is bigger in Texas" into perspective! LOL. I am kind of partial to the western half of the country myself, and especially Texas but then again, I've never visited the eastern half of the country very much.

The Big Texan used to give out T-shirts if you could finish off the steak as well...always showing something about how you ate the 72 oz'er. That was several years ago and I've not been there since. While you are in the area, you can also go to Palo Duro Canyon and Cadillac Ranch. Just so you could say you've been there.....lol

Things I've done (with or without hubby): Rte. 66 (what's left of it), the West Coast, Tybee Island/Savannah, GA (that was more than 10 years ago though and I'm sure Tybee Island has changed drastically since I was there, but Savannah is really beautiful!), The Rockies, the Gulf Coast of TX (Padre Island, very nice!), and Kansas. Really! I thought Kansas was great! I was pleasantly surprised! I've never done New England/NYC/PA, etc., and hope to someday if I ever come back to the States.

I'd go before everyplace starts to get too hot...May/early June, or wait 'til Autumn (New England's meant to be gorgeous in the Fall...but I guess anywhere with big trees changing colours would be nice). I'm personally not a fan of winter (could be cos I'm from WI and I've endured many a wicked winter!), but I s'pose that would be considered "off-season" and flights would be cheaper? Heck, I dunno.

Best of luck, anyway...wherever you end up. Sometimes the best trips are the ones less-planned!

When the hubby and I did our U.S. visit, I had a huge itinerary planned and a million places we wanted to go. Because I was trying to keep up with online classes at the same time, we ended up rushed through most and missing quite a bit. :(( So my first piece of advice is to focus on what the two of you think is really important so you have time to enjoy everything! My husband said his favorite parts of our U.S. trip were the hockey game we saw in Dallas and going to Disneyland. I know Disneyland was also my favorite part, so I guess I'd say try to cater both to his interests (my husband loves hockey) and your own. We went in the spring, so the weather was so-so, and we're hoping to get to go next February so he can see some real snow and not just leftover patches on the side of the highway. :p

If you go in winter - I would do a New England Christmas - you are going to have snow and it's just so lovely up there - good skiing also.
As for a summer trip - being from the South - I also suggest Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC - both lovely southern colonial towns - where you can never get enough fresh seafood (fried, of course), hush puppies and grits. I'd also try to catch a Major League Baseball game if you go in summer. Turner Field in Atlanta is a sight to behold, and of course other great ball parks are Yankee Statium, Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, etc, etc...
Anyway, just a couple of additional thoughts.

Okay, I'm born and bred New Englander and I think you can't go wrong with either summer in New England or Christmas in New England. However, you could go with an untraditional holiday THANKSGIVING!! I say that because the Christmas decorations come out, the food is so different, and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade!! All things an Aussie will not have experienced then you could make your way down the east coast stopping in Philadelphia for a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich with the works (known in Aussie terms as the LOT). :p Then stop and see the nations capitol (spend 2-3 days picking out a few museums to see) Washington DC. Then make your way to Hilton Head, NC (he'll begin to thaw at this point) and check out the resorts. Once there take a look at a map and decide whether you drive through GA or stop and take the tour that is related to the book "Midnight In the Garden Of Good and Evil". From Savannah, GA head to Florida and the "Space Coast" better known as Cocoa Beach/Titusville to check out NASA. Even if you don't see a shuttle launch you might catch a rocket launch plus they have tours of NASA and a meet and greet with an astronaut. By now both of you should be thawed as southern Florida in winter is perfect weather.

I can come up with others if you want but that is for another time.....

hugs,
Jennifer

I have seen most of the states and they all something for everyone but there is one that I think everyone should see just once and that Is Alaska. I always told the Wife that Im not going out of the country for a vacation or for any reason until I make it there. Well Im sitting in Upwey Victoria and I still have not made it to Alaska, she says that when we make up our minds when were going back to the states we can swing by there on the way home, but she also said we have to hit New Zealand, Fuji, Honalulu, and the Cook Ilands, so I may as well for get Alaska cause I will be broke before we get there.

I've been to Massachussetts in the winter...if you've never seen snow (like I hadn't) then it's really awesome to see it falling and coating all the trees and buildings...and sure it's damn cold...but it seemed to be a clear cold..not a damp cold...and of course if you have any interest in the American revolution then it's the place to go..you can feel the atmosphere when you visit the places where the birth of this nation begun. Also did the Kennedy space center..awesome..when we were leaving I looked back and thought.."it's just a small dot on the map..but from this place mankind has the technology to reach the stars"..really incredible feeling...coming from Australia I wouldn't just come to Florida for the weather..much of Australia has just as good if not better..so no point in that..places like the grand canyon..yellowstone national park..yosemite national park..the rocky mountains...I haven't been to any of those places yet myself...but to an expat aussie like me..in all that natural grandeur...that's where the soul of America is...you can understand why Americans have so many songs of praise to God for their (and mine) country.
