My mom lives in a semi-small town north of L.A. and while at work today she met an Aussie on the phone. He is from Melbourne but has been living in CA for about 3 years now. He was so terribly homesick that he even went to my moms office with a plate of cookies just to chat and hear stories about Australia.

After he left my mom emailed my husband and I his email address and told us about him. Ray emailed him back with the g'day mate how are ya kinda stuff and the guy actually picked up the phone and called my husband at work for a chat. He is so terribly homesick and misses Melbourne sooooo bad!!

So here is me thinkin that I want to put together a rockin' care package because I leave for the US in 10 days. I need help here people!!!! I know the Tim Tams and Vegemite are a must - but what else should I put in the bag? (I'm gonna stack it all in a green Safeway bag so he will feel more at home :) )

I'm also gonna pass along the MUO link and hopefully get him in touch with some Aussies in the US if he hasn't done so already.

Poor guy! Let's see... Kirk says, you should definitely have Sao's (those crackers), an assortment of Cadbury Chocolates, an assortment of Allen's jellies (especially milk bottles and Chicos), Violet Crumble, custard powder, wholegrain mustard, and ANZAC biscuits. Oh, and don't forget the ginger beer. Can you fit all that in?

Good idea on the MUO link... I know they've got a few (maybe more than a few!) members in LA and they'll set him up over there. :goodonya:

Yep definately enough room. I was planning on taking a small suitcase shoved inside a large suitcase so I can shop and bring tons back - but hey if I can fill it going that way to for this guy I will!

I called my hubby on the phone and demanded to know why I don't know what Sao's, Violet Crubles, Chicos, and milk bottles are. I feel so left out! I said what kind of Australian host are you! hahaha

And is the mustard really that different? Then again I haven't tried Aussie mustard.

Snowballs.. and a packet of Lamingtons or a chocolate "roll" (cake rolled up with a white 'cream' in the centre!) Mmmmm ;)

I could have killed for Aussie food while in the US. We ordered things like Tim Tams from an online store located in Arizona, of all places. It was amazing when that stuff showed up. We ordered Cherry-Ripe, Jaffas (Marty's favorite!), Turkish Delight, Chicos (those chocolate 'jelly baby' things) and Vegemite. Even something as simple as a packet of Twisties can make you tear-up. lol

Can't eat any of it now, though. lol.. :rollin:

I'd just eat the banana, the combination is too complicated and expensive! :hugs:
I give you credit for sticking to that diet... I made a carob-choccie birthday-cake that way! My neighbours avoided me for YEARS! :yaay:

Ask him what he drinks? Aussies always miss their local grog :) My hubby brought over an assortment of Cascade beers when we were last home and my mum's partner (not Australian) but loved it anyway!!

Btw .. I just bought a $10 bottle of Hershey's syrup and a $13 box of Old Bay Seasoning!!! (which I CANNOT believe I found in Hobart!!!)

Make sure you put some crackers in the care package like Shapes, etc just in case he likes his vegemite on crackers. :p Angie you absolutely rock for doing this for the guy....ohhh I just had an idea

If one of our "Melbournians" had a video camera and felt froggy enough what about making a dvd of Melbourne sights? I know I would have given anything to see bits of "home" when I was in Oz. Heck, I played Perfect Catch (aka Fever Pitch) so many times just to see my Red Sox, Boston and hear the accent (which was done poorly...but who cares when you miss home). Maybe even get some to say "G'day mate" to him....or would that be to tortureous? Maybe still photos then?

Just an idea.

I'm assuming based solely on that affectionate description, you forgot to mention taste-free? ;)

They're not too bad - I just whinge. ;) I'm having a go at myself for *not* sticking to the diet lately and eating too much takeaway pizza and fish n chips. The results are mild (sinuses) so far, but I really do enjoy breathing through my nose, so I'll be good. :p

The beer idea is a great one. When we settled-in here in Adelaide, I got Marty to get one of every beer we could find in the BWS. It was great, he liked Cascade in the end, oh.. and XXXX!! :rollin: Personally, I love the sweet "girly" drinks.. lol I remember missing something as simple as coridal as well, and OMG mmmmm lemon lime & bitters.. :lurve:

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW Chicos....gaggagagagagag :$

Lets see.....when I was over there, I missed the things like violet crumbles (although I could find them on occasion) AND PEPPERMINT CRISPS. There are also the Aussie things like musk lifesavers, jaffas, peppermint patties, golden roughs (YUM) and wagon wheels. MOST people would like those choices, although I would EAT wagon wheels, I may not enjoy them as much as the others. Of course a box of savoury shapes wouldnt go amiss :)))) and VEGEMITE! :)~

It may sound a bit odd, but I used to tape ads and some select shows from the telly for my cousin overseas and he loved that. Perhaps some Australian TV on a disk?

I love the TV idea. Does anyone know if there is a place on the internet I can download these shows from?

I hear he is a HUGE rugby fan. So maybe a few games?

I did drop him an email to ask if there was something I can bring him that he really misses and he mentioned fruit tingles, snakes alive, and dinosaurs. Not that I know what any of that is. How come I am feeling really left out on all these things. GRR @ husband!

So far we have a huge list! haha It's gonna be insane. I can just see me walking into his office now with arm loads of Aussie groceries in green bags! "Here I went grocery shopping for you!!"

Has anyone had problems getting food through customs?

I took Vegemite and Weetbix through customs (hey, forgot to mention about weetbix!!) with no trouble at all. They just wanted to know if there was any meat in it - or dairy, I think? Either way, there was no meat in Vegemite.. lol

A lot of Australian TV is available on the net.. the only problem is, that many of the best sites require registration. Basically, you wait until the registrations are open, or you ask someone you know for a invite. I am a member of what I consider to be one of the best (we don't own a TV, so this is the only way we get to see things we love like "Border Patrol" etc..) - Diwana. If your new friend is interested, and is willing to learn a little about torrents, then I will be happy to invite him. They keep it tight, so there is less chance of people just taking and not giving, and perhaps being caught - because it is illegal.

I'd suggest you buy two of everything you want to give him.. one for him, and one for you to try yourself. ;) Mmmm..

It does suck not to be able to eat it all, anymore. ;) Ya gotta live just a little - and I'm sure he'd make an exception for this one chance to get some Aussie goodies.
