I have good news, but I need to vent at the same time. I got a job today working for a local sports store that does embroidery.... :)) :redpepper: :eggplant: which I am very happy that I was finally offered a job. I took the job tentatively I am to start on Monday. However, I have my heart set on a different job with no guarantee I will get it.

This other job I interviewed for yesterday. I would be a Production Assistant for a local mom/pop candle company. I would be making tapered candles by hand. I just fell in love with the job and feel like it is something I could do. I feel like I found my niche. I really liked the owner and the hours are such that I can decide when I come in and leave. I make them according to what my needs are as long as I get in full time hours and get the work done. I would be working independently unless one of the other workers needed help then I would jump in and help. I get to wear jeans and it is a very relaxed kind of atmosphere. Very informal which I love. I shared something in common with the owner in that we both don't want to work in an office, a cubicle or anything with florescent lights again. I won't hear anything until Thursday or Friday.

This other job really entices me because I am so done with bosses who stress about everything, yell if #5 on the list isn't done when I've been working on #1 which was priority two seconds before. I learned while in Australia that I really didn't want to work that way anymore after the two jobs I had where I didn't get any pressure like that. Of course there was stress with each job, but not having a fire breather on your neck was wonderful and I have reached a point in my life where I am no longer going to be shy about it.

I am wondering if I should have agreed to start on Monday or if I should have said "I will think about it" and call on Friday with an answer. Would it be wrong to decide not to take it if I get this other job (which makes more money too by .50 an hour)? Neal thinks it is okay to back out if a better one comes along before Monday and if nothing pans out then I just work this one until something does. Also, there is a 2 week trial period where either one of us or both of us can say this isn't working out and part ways no hard feelings (this is the sports one I'm talking about still).

Anyways, I am happy to be going to work. The embroidery place isn't a bad job and it gets me out of office work. Hours are 8am-4pm M-F w/no overtime. There are some benefits, but this place is small. I will be able to start a 401k with 2% match from the company. The other company is offering profit sharing as it is a rapidly growing company. Oh what to do???

Any thoughts? Just looking for feed back as I have never been in this kind of position before. I am excited though really really really.... :)) :)) :redpepper: :eggplant: :redpepper: :eggplant:

:congrats:

YAY Jennifer!

I would wait to see if you get the candle job and when you hear back then make the decision. If you don't hear by Thursday night I would call Friday morning and just say that you have been offered another position, but would much prefer to work making the candles and could they give you an answer so you can answer the other company. I think upfront and honest with the candle company may be the way to go, they should appreciate the position you are in.

I have everything crossed for you, good luck!!!

Thanks Natalie. It was really nice to tell Neal that I got a job and I will be helping in beginning to get us back on our feet.

I realized that I have another job opportunity looming out there that I applied for and interviewed nearly two weeks ago. Unfortunately, I may have to seriously consider this other office position if they come back with a fantastic salary and health benefits because the other two don't offer acceptable health insurance or great pay (the other two would solely be for my enjoyment). We need both at this point.

I don't want to work in an office, but it is what I do that brings in more money. I say this only after talking with Neal for a while since telling him about the job offer. I have to do what is best for the family even if it means putting off what I want to do for a short time until we get things righted.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

awwww :hugs: Jennifer!
:yaay: I'm really excited for you, that you've got offers!
And (having raised 2 boys, but as a single-mum most of the time) I TOTALLY understand the health-benefits aspect! You can't afford to go without, these days, we'd have been homeless when I got ill, or I'd have died, being unable to afford the treatment I needed!
:goodonya: Decisions, decisions... But I hope you get one you like!!!
:hugs: :hugs: :hugs: :hugs: :hugs:
One for each of you

Your husband is right!

You said "yes" to a job offer you would be ok with...yay!

Then you interviewed with another place that wasn't ready to make a decision.

If the candle place calls you with an offer before Monday, call the nice embroidery people and decline gracefully. They will have interviewed others and will have a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th choice to contact.

If the candle place calls you after you start the embroidery job, you can still quit and take the candle place.

It's about YOU and your happiness.

Oh - I did say your husband's strategy was right. Don't tell my husband I every said ANY husband was right........

You gotta do what's good for you - deep down. I know the money and benefits are tempting with office work, but is it worth the stress?

I was in a similar situation to you only a month ago - offered great pay in an office, doing data entry. It was a daily grind, no flexability in work hours, traffic to and from work, long hours etc..

I took the supermarket job - crazy as it sounds, with less pay - but flexible hours, no office environment, walk to work and shorter hours every day.

Just this morning I got a call from the data entry job, wondering if my situation has changed, and if I'd be interested in working for them! I swear, nothing like that has ever happened to me before. They must think I'm *completely nuts* turning them down twice, for a supermarket job!! But ya gotta do whats right for you and your body and your stress levels. We're comfortable (sure, we'd be *more* comfortable with more $$, who wouldn't?), and we're happy. That's what matters.

Hopefully the candle place got the same good feelings about you as you did about them. :) Crossing everything for ya!

I also know what you mean about $$$, ya'll have moved around the world in a couple years, and need to make up the losses involved, and I'm sure there are many, but it was the BEST experience!
Yeah, I juggled 3 jobs at one time, all casual part-time stuff, I needed the work! a.) I was an on-call veterinarian for an old retiring guy, while he was closing his practice, because that paid the most $$ and gave me health benefits, but was sporadic, he drank alot now and then  b.) I worked as a USPS substitute mail carrier because I could sub on 3 rural routes, and that paid $100/day plus mileage, but was hell on a car, 100 miles a day of country roads and 400 stops, and c.) any other time I didn't have to be home being MOM I sat in 1 of 4 ~100-ft high fire-towers, for the DNR, overlooking Lake Superior and/or the BWCAW, and it was sooo peaceful and quiet up there, nothing but turkey-buzzards and bald eagles and DNR smoke-spotting planes peeking at me, I could sunbathe naked ;)
But yeah, we do whatever we gotta do, wherever we are, and I STILL don't know what I wanna be when I grow up! :yaay:

Hi Jen, I have been in that situation, and quite frankly it sucks. If its a decision between the embroidery company and the candle company, if the bennies are approx the same then you need to decide which one you would like more, which I gather is the candle one. BUT I wouldnt decline the embroidery job because at this point you dont know if you have the other one. NY'ker is right. If you havent heard from the candle one by Friday am, call them and tell them you have another offer, but you would LOVE to work for them, and if a decision is made. Either way, you will know Friday eh?

As far as the other issue....I HAD to get employment due to changes in Govt requirements....not to say I wouldnt have gone out and got myself a job anyway, but I am not in the same position as a lot of you. However, with that said, I am working in a position that I dont really like, but the flexibility is great and the people are WONDERFUL. I work this position so that I can be there for my son. So yes, like you, I have to put aside my needs at the moment because HE is more important and being there for him is more important to me at this time. I am not telling you that you have to accept something truly horrible, but if you think that your family's financial needs are greater at this time, then you need to do what you need to do to help. It may take a little while, but you WILL find a job that has more good things about it than bad...that you can earn a good salary and get the benefits of that. If you can manage on Neal's salary package, and its more important to do something that you enjoy totally, but without benefits, then that maybe more beneficial to your family, as you will be happier (which is great for your family too). You know your family situation better than anyone. I have, as probably many of you, worked in shitty jobs as a means to an end. Least my shitty job has some wonderful benefits and friends... :))))

I am not sure if that helped or not LOL

:rollin:  I won't breathe a word to anyone, Dee!! Thank you!

I appreciate everyones opinion. I will call and check on the candle position, and I will call on the office position too. I may have to consider the office position as we really need the salary (if it pays more than $8.50 an hr) to get back on our feet. We have no living room furniture, we need a new computer (ours got damaged when it was shipped from Oz, it won't turn on and we didn't get insurance for it b/c it is 9 years old...yes, we bought it in 1998 so its a dinosaur), we all need winter clothes, etc.

I realize we've moved across the world not once but twice. In my head I minimize the enormity of what we did and still think "it is just like moving from Rhode Island to New Hampshire" which is most definitely not the same!! In my head I'm using little compartments to shove things in so I don't get overwhelmed by the hugeness of all of this. Man if anyone thinks starting over is easy, needs to talk to me b/c this has not been a walk in the park.

I know I don't have the office job or candle job in the bag, but I have discovered what I don't to do anymore. I feel pretty good that I obtained a position for something I've never done before. I'll keep y'all posted as to which way this goes.

no kidding... the ranger would tell the pilot which tower I was in, and somehow he could sneak up on me without me hearing him, don't know if he shut the engine off or what... nothing like having a plane suddenly 10 feet away, with 2 guys leering at you :headscratch: :&
Good luck Jennifer!

Sorry, lol I am waiting to hear from the candle place. I was told that I would hear today (Monday) if I got it or not so I told the embroidery place I could start Wednesday. If I do get the candle place I will tell the embroidery place that I have to take a job that is going to pay more due to my husband not making as much money as we had anticipated (okay, that is a bit of news I can't talk about yet...).

Anyways, I hope to have an answer by this afternoon. Here is hoping, praying and everything in between.

Okay, here it is....I didn't get the candle job. :( The owner went with someone who use to work with an associate so the choice was me no candle making experience or a ringer.....doh! I mean why get my hopes up? :& :headscratch: I know she was being nice but I would have rather been told the truth Friday then make me wait until Monday afternoon and to top it off I had to email to find out. She didn't even remember to let me know! :nono: Well, here is another kicker.....

I decided not to go with the embroidery job either. I really began to feel I wasn't a fit even though I would give it my best go, I just couldn't go through with it. So after the disappointing email I received a call from a temp agency I signed up with the week before last. They had an assignment doing order entry, light admin duties, etc. The pay? $12 per hr! :)) That beats the embroidery by $4 per hr. It is the most money I've made stateside (made more in Melbourne)

Now for the reason for changing back to office work....Neal had to find different work. The job in Ossipee didn't work, not on Neal's part, but the companies part (I can't go into it). Anyways, he received a job offer but the salary is $15k less than Ossipee and $20k less than Alabama and Australia jobs. This made it important for me to find something making more than $8 per hr. I hope this job works well for me. I found my job in Melbourne through a temp and I just loved the job! I'm keeping an open mind and hopefully they will say I can wear nice jeans to work...I can get past no sneakers/runners but to wear jeans would be awesome! :lurve:

So that is where I am right now. I start work Wednesday 15 minutes away from home. I will be working later which means the girls will have to take over dinner duties as Neal will possibly be working 2nd shift. That is if he doesn't get a job offer with a company....he has an interview Wednesday....he really likes the sound of the job, but we will see.....interviews always reveal interesting things.

sorry to hear that Jen, but things happen for a reason. The one good thing about a temp job is if you dont like it they can find you something else :) And the extra pay will be a major bonus at the moment. The girls should be ok. The one thing is that you can have a cooking day and cook up things for the freezer that they can take out and put in the microwave or oven. It just takes a little bit of adjustment. Even I have to do that, since we have swimming lessons on Tues, and now my boy is joining Joeys on Monday, that starts at 5pm (right at our dinner time).

Have a wonderful first day at work...I am sure you'll do GREAT!!!!

Thanks everyone! Even though I am disappointed I do believe everything happens for a reason. I had been praying for a good job that I would like to come along and just when I was feeling in the pits I get the phone call. The really weird part is that I had sent my resume to this company about an open position for a Purchasing Clerk and it sounds like the same duties I will be doing when I get there. Talk about off chances...what are the chances? Anyways, this is really simple to get to, I hop on the highway, pay a small toll, get off the next exit, turn left, then right and poof I'm there!! I don't think it will take even 15 minutes! I'm pumping myself up for it plus it is temporary so I can opt not to keep going with it and then I may love it, they love me and I get a permanent job out of it.

Who, knows! I'll let you all know Wednesday night/Thursday morning.
