Corn Syrup? What can I use & where can I find it?

Getting ready for a thanksgiving dinner shopping and would like to make a pecan pie. Has anyone used glucose syrup? Is there something better? Or has anyone actually ever seen corn syrup on the shelves?

Thanks for any help,
Amy

Hi Amy! Do you have a 5-Star Supermarket down there? The one up here carries corn syrup (only the light stuff, though). The other place I've seen corn syrup, believe it or not, is in health food stores.

Glucose Syrup, Treacle and Golden Syrup are not quite the same taste, so I don't know how pecan pie would go, but maybe someone else here has used 'em! When are you having Thanksgiving?

I've seen corn syrup in Coles down south here. I remember when I first worked there many moons ago now, a customer asked me where it was. I'd never heard of it before. hehe.

There is Rice Syrup now days, too.. although I don't know if that'd do in it's place. I *so* want to try it, but I bet it'll be too sweet and naughty for me. :)

I've used golden syrup in my oatmeal pie, which is somewhat similar to the consistency of pecan pie...you just have to check it more often as cooking times can change. I did buy corn syrup in a health food store, surprisingly, in adelaide.

I did pecan pies with Golden Syrup for my "Thanksgiving in July" feast.
It was different... darker, different taste, different texture (a bit crystallized), but the in-laws sure ate every bit of it!
I might have baked them too long, as trix suggests. I have 1/2 a jar of Golden Syrup left, going to try it again soon and maybe use less syrup and one more egg, it wasn't quite the consistency and smoothness you get with Karo syrup.
But it was better than no pecan pie at all!
:hugs:

Yes, yes it does...but...
I found molasses at the animal feed store

You really need to think outside the box here, finding all the stuff we're used to.

Shouldn't need to go to a livestock feed store for molasses! As a kid, we always had a tin of molasses in the cupboard - goodness knows why, my Mum rarely used the stuff. ;) Then again, I don't see it at the supermarket these days either.. But that's not surprising. Everything "cooking" related has been shoved in one isle (4 in our case) and the rest of the store is for lollies, chips, softdrink, ready-made meals and canned food. I guess you're just not suppose to cook for yourselves anymore. lol ((Spring means spending less time in the kitchen, and more time outdoors with family and friends..)) Argh! :$ I gotta stop listening to the store radio.

It is hilarious to find this posting on here b'c my husband and i had the same dilemma the other night. He really wants Pecan pie for thanksgiving and couldn't find corn syrup. I once had a bad experience with Golden Syrup. As others said, it made everything taste too granulated and more sweet than usual.

So, instead we found that we could use GLUCOSE syrup as long as it says that it is made from corn on the back. We got it... How about you let me know how your pecan pie goes, and i'll let you know how ours goes with the glucose syrup....

Good luck!

I decided to skip the Pumpkin pie. A nice lady at a local shop is sourcing Karo for me so maybe I'll have one for Chrissy.

I did roast "pumpkin" (squash) for my pie. Its all ready to go for assembly/baking.

I also made a Huge White/Chocolate/Rasberry Cheesecake (I know not very Thanksgivingy) because I love it!

Please let me know how the glucose syrup goes. If it turns out, I'd like to know the brand name.

Thanks and Happy Turkey Day to all!

the pecan pie with the glucose syrup was tasty but didn't solidify properly. it was liquid-ey still after we baked it for ages.
Anyway, it tasted good though!!!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone

I'll skip the glucose then and hold out for Karo.
Just wanted to say my Pumpkin pie was delicious! We don't need no stinkin' Libby's!

Thanks to this site for the tip on the Roasting Jaradahle (sp?) It was PERFECT!

My Australian Neighbors loved our feast. Turkey Breast on the Grill was YUM too. I am oh so pooped. I'm just going to plop on the couch and surf Austar. (or break down and watch my i-tunes Grey's Anatomy ep from last week that I was saving....)

For you Perthites/Perthians/Sandgropers/whatever...
I found Karo Syrup!!! :)) at Kakulas Sisters in Nollamara (they also have a store on Market Street in Fremantle), Light Karo, Dark Karo, and Karo Pancake Syrup.
This is a really neat whole foods/organic/specialty store, started by one of the daughters of Kakula Brothers in Northbridge, which is also totally cool, bulk dried goods and lots of imported and specialty items.
Their cheeses are to die for, and the imported coffee corner smelled heavenly!
I'm off to make cashew brittle...... :yaay:

ETA: yeah, it was pricey: $7.80/16oz
Imported by: Exclusive Food Houses, Moorabbin, Vic... so mebbe y'all can find more in Melbourne.
Also, isn't it ridiculous how ecstatic one can be about something so weird? :eggplant:

Not at all -- little things can mean a lot! I remember when we moved to Alaska from Chicago 14 years ago, there were a number of things we had been accustomed to having at our fingertips that were no longer available to us. Nothing major, just an occasional food item that we'd look for at the store and be a bit taken aback when we couldn't find it. Over the years, though, the stores up here have ended up getting most of the things we would want.

I wonder if anyone has ever considered opening up a dedicated "American grocery" shop in Australia...would there be enough business to keep it running?

Ven,
USA Foods http://www.usafoods.com.au/ (why can't I make the button work anymore!?! :arrgh: ) is exactly that, and they do a GREAT business!
Problem is, shipping to Perth starts @ $6.90 or some such, and goes up fast, so I'm trying to find local stuff...... Hey, if you move here and want to start a shop, I'll work for you! 8)

Over Christmas I was in David Jones food hall. There was a big display of stuff from USA Foods - Jif, Welch's grape jelly, Karo syrup, Crisco - I got so excited!! Loaded up on lots of stuff (I did leave a little for everyone else :p ) Yeah, my mom thought I had lost my mind

Does anyone else think that USA Foods prices are crazy? $15 for a box of Cap'n Crunch?!

I just found Glucose Syrup (light corn-based syrup) at Woolworth's in West Ryde (Sydney burbs). It's in the baking aisle with a yellow label and red top. Sold in 500g containers.
