I just found Glucose Syrup (light corn-based syrup) at Woolworth's in West Ryde (Sydney burbs). It's in the baking aisle with a yellow label and red top. Sold in 500g containers.
I tried some of that stuff once making desert, didn't work very well. Seemed like it would be pretty close, but just didn't heat right. I think it was too think compared to Karo.

But we're lucky now, the IGA near where we just moved has all sorts of odd stuff, including both light and dark Karo corn syrup. If anyone is WA south of the river is ever looking for random good, the Leeming IGA seems to have a much better selection than most stores around here.

The David Jones food hall here in Melbourne sells canned Libbey's pumpkin and canned easy pumpkin pie mix and I saw both light and dark Karo syrup for sale (pecan pie receipe is on the label) in a health food store (???) in the South Melbourne Market.

Pamm, I can find Karo syrup here in town, let me know if you want me to pick up some for you.
For pumpkin I just cook a butternut squash and it turns out GREAT :goodonya:
You won't find canned pumpkin unless you order it from USAFoods. :(

eta: glucose syrup can be a number of thicknesses, and made from wheat or potatoes, so it's not a fool-proof substitute, as JBark says. ( Hi, JBark! LTNS)

For the Perth folks, they stock Karo syrup at the IGA in Wembley as well! :)

Thanks, Lisa! I checked Woolies, will check IGA and Coles too before I give up ;) Oh and Santa Marias. They say they'll get you anything you want, so I may take them up on that with the pumpkin! :rollin:

Glucose syrup is not the same thing as corn syrup, but it will work in a pinch. :goodonya:
