Hello everyone,

I have read a lot about which American foods are being missed by Americans in Australia. I would like to hear about which Australian foods that are not available in the US Americans have come to enjoy and would miss if they were to return home. While in Australia I enjoyed the fish and chips with chicken salt on the chips, Tim Tams, mint Tam Tams, meat pies, sausage rolls, the easily available sushi, lamingtons, and believe it or not I really like Vegemite and Promite. I tried a dim sim and it tasted very strongly of lamb. :$ Maybe it was just a bad one. The pepperoni on pizza seems very spicy and has a different flavor.(I've only tried pizza twice in Oz.) I know that there are many more good and unique Aussie foods to try. Any suggestions?

I almost forgot about the great beer! I love VB and Carlton.
Jed

The pizza shapes are the BEST! But more specifically the Italian woodfired pizza Shapes in the blue box. Yuuum!

I also love moroccon spice rice crackers, tim tams and above all else- the number one thing that Australia has that California doesnt (at least not as good)

THAI FOOD! I love thai food and it is SOOOOO much better here than in CA. I'm fine giving up mexican for thai, although I do miss mexican sometimes, I'd rather eat Thai more often!

I'm not impressed with the pies here. To me, the frozen pot pies we get from costco back home are much better, but I shouldn't really judge because I've only actually eaten one of them. it just was dry and not that fantastic.

I'm looking forward to:

Thai food
Chinese food
Vietnamese food
Muesli
bread (the bread here is so sweet - except some at Trader Joe's)
Long Machiattos (aka long mac)
Laksa
Los Angeles to Melbourne with my Yank wife (and dual daughter plus twins in the oven)

I agree about the Thai food! (but I'm troubled about giving up Mexican food--so I'm bringing lots of cookbooks and hoping to find the necessary ingredients!)
I love Nutri-grain, My daughter loves Vita-brits.
I love that at Red Rooster you can get pumpkin as a side dish
Campbells Cream of Pumpkin soup
I love Flat Whites: why don't they make them in the US?
Pavlova
devonshire tea (I don't know if I'll get used to pronouncing them scons though!)
My kids are crazy about Freddo Frogs, Cherry Ripe and Turkish Delight (Ok I like them too)
Marron and Barramundi
Chili Mussels
Lemon lime and bitters
I had chocolate covered Boab tree nuts in Broome
I'm looking forward to trying Laksa.
I'd also like to try some of the Australian native plant foods like riberry and bush tomato

Lol, I STILL say it wrong and I've been here over a year! And it never fails, the person behind the counter always says "what was that?" or some variation of "haha, you can't pronounce it so I'm going to make you say it again just to humiliate you!".

I haven't had much trouble finding most ingredients for Mexican food except tomatillos and diced green chiles- which you can order at the USA Foods store in Melbourne :)

Hello again,
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I also had great Tahi food in Sydney at a very small place in Kings Cross. I don't remember the name but I will never forget the meal. I was not thinking of this while wondering about "Australian" food. It is really just a takeout counter on a walkway (Lankelly place??) just off of Darlinghurst Rd. I had a large portion of excellent Pad Tahi noodles cooked to order in the open kitchen by a very welcoming staff. I also remember that it was very cheap too! If it is still there I reccomend it. Perhaps someone recognises this place I am describing.
I 'm sure I'll have plenty more to say about food in this forum after I am in Australia.

MMMM LAKSAS

and lemon lime bitters!!

Yes these two things are great. Even when I can find Thai food back in CA I never see laksas on the menu.

Has anyone been to Thai Intra? They are actually a mini chain (amazing for Australia) so they have a few around the sydney area. They have the BEST chicken laksa.

I guess i should post this in the recommended restaurants category :)

Hey Jed - BTW Thanks for visiting my blog and posting some comments...I've had Miami on my Mind lately, as I have been reading heaps of Dorsey and Hiaasen novels. Synchronicity!

Anyway - the restaurant you are describing sounds very much like one I've been to in the cross. Was it kind of down a little alley way/pedestrian park? Family run place, where they may have been shucking peas or cleaning shrimp? Metal tables and chairs, four max? If it is the same place, they do make some fine soul food.

It is my observation that Thai food here comes in two distinct styles - everyday family style Thai, and absolutely fucking delicious gourmet out of this world flavored Thai with fantastic presentation, ambience, and service. I've never quite encountered food like that in the US...as we consider locations for repatriation, the discussion inevitably includes the likeliehood of getting good Thai food there!

Cheers,

Audra

Lol, I've never seen this commercial- hilarious! Only feeds my obsession more! I'd for sure have to have these shipped to me on a monthly basis if I ever move back to the States!

Hey Audra,

Thanks for leading me to YDU. :goodonya: I forgot how I stumbled onto your blog originally but I enjoy reading it. For a while I thought your photo was a faraway picture of a komodo dragon and only later realized that it was an expired kangaroo! You have a link to Social Primate and he has a link to YDU. We share the tendancy to rescue furniture and appliances from the garbage. Vacuum cleaners are my favorite. Usually all they need is a new drive belt and a good cleaning.

The Thai place you describe is most likely the same one I ate at. It was under a hostel near a Pieface pie shop and across the brown brick walkway from Travel Bugs. This is just off of Darlinghurst Rd. Travel Bugs has cartoon backpacking bugs on their signs. I think the walkway had some yellow and red colored lights strung across between the buildings. There are a few tables outside and maybe a counter to eat at and a drink fridge in the small indoor space. I think that there is a large menu board to order from above the service counter. It has been over a year since I was there.

Is the underground sushi kiosk you mention the one in Kings Cross station? I liked getting sushi there and at the sushi counter in the exit of the Manly ferry terminal.
I also loved the endless variety of foodcourts in Sydney. Love the Aussie beer too!

Sydney is great but I really like Melbourne! This is where I will be living as soon as I sell my condo and arrange the move.
By the way I also turned 40 in November. (11-27-67)

Have fun and thanks, Jed
