I don't let my laptop out of my clutches except to go through security and at takeoff and landing, my life is on this thing.

I really, REALLY do not want to freak you out but just be aware, airport security has been nosing through people's laptops, or even seizing them as well as mobile phones and other portable electronics. I saw the stories circulating about this a few weeks back. (I will find the links to the stories later).

I am only saying this because if I were you, I would make sure you don't have any pirated software, music or anything you don't want anyone to see on your laptop before your leave. Some companies are now making the employee wipe the hard drive before international travel.

Just how much of this the media has hyped up, I can not say.

Oy! I'll be sure to do a thorough check. I'm pretty sure I don't have anything objectionable on it, unless you count the obscene amount of downloads of stuff for Sims 2 ;)

I would appreciate those links, definitely! This is the kind of thing I love knowing, dunno how I missed those stories :)

I guess I'll see about getting some mild sedatives to take off the anxiety edge, and just remember why I'm flying :)

Xanax works really well! 8)

If I were you I wouldn't get mild sedatives... get full on sleeping pills :)

Well, I only say that becuase I am a "challenged" sleeper. Even taking an ambien on this last flight only put me to sleep about an hour later and it wasn't the best sleep ever. I can't go on a long flight without it.

But if it's just nerves... just remember, planes are safer than cars. AND if you are flying qantas... know that they've never had an accident in the history of the company and they are the 3rd oldest continuously running airline. If you are flying another airline, they'll be safe as well. And planes can take MASSIVE amounts of turbulence without damaging anything so even major bumps here and there won't do anything!! I always chuckle a bit during turbulence when I look around and people are clenching their seats and I know it's no big deal.

best of luck for your visit. I bet you can't wait!!

Pamm, if you have general-flight-anxiety, it's not a matter of sleeping enroute, it's getting on the sucker in the first place, and another, and maybe another, depending on your routing. And I know you don't want to be sedated during transfers, etc.
Xanax works wonders.

I've been a pilot and flown planes for over 30 years.
But I still have anxiety when I'm not the one piloting :p  8)

I think it's mosty nerves. It's really weird too. I flew the first time when I was six months old, and never had a problem till I was 17 or 18 and flew to Kansasa City, MO on my own to stay with my Grandpa a while. For some reason on the flight back I got scared when we were in the air, and spent most of that flight white-knuckling. I honestly don't know *why* it happened.

Logically I know planes are safe, truly :) But sometimes I look out a window and wonder how the heck this thing got in the air in the first place, and off goes my worrying! The Xanas is something I'll give serious thought to. I do want to be alert at transfer times.

I'm not sure which carrier I'll use yet, I'm plugging in various options on different sites to see what I can come up with. So far the lowest is $2200 or so. We can manage that. We have savings together, which will be in both our names once I'm there. Right now he sends me money every month and it goes from Paypal to my bank account to savings for our future.

Elsja, I am excited! I just need to finish up some stuff in Phoenix, then I can start packing stuff to send back to Maryland. My folks have my old room ready to store things in, as well as for me to sleep in. I want so badly to go home and spend time with my family, and Jason wants me to also. We both wish he could come get me, but that's not a viable financial option right now. He *is* gonna come back with me someday :)

I do know I'd love to get a plane where the seats aren't those awful smallish ones. I was so uncomfortable on my last flight home. And the man in front of me reclined and hit my knees. I tell you, he was lucky I didn't scream my head off! It hit the knee I have the most pain in, the one that was replaced and it *hurt*! The wonderful hostess found me an empty seat up front for the rest of the flight. Thank goodness for small favors :)

For reference I just got back from Munich yesterday, and going through customs over there I was searched. I am not sure why they picked me, but the guy was very intent on finding out if I was smuggling IPhones in. But no one ever checked my laptop.

Now coming back from Munich to the States the security guy in Munich checked my Digital SLR to make sure it turned on and worked. They do not do this in the States.

So if you are worried about flying just be prepared for some weird stuff. And extra batteries for stuff that can run out of juice. Though Qantas had all the entertainment you need for such a long flight.

When I went over to Oz I had lots and lots of VB being served to me. I like to fly though. Except that I am 6'4 and don't fit in the seats. I hope my new job is paying at least business class for the move over.
job fell through, guess i wont be going anymore

I've flown within the US since 9/11, so I'm more or less used to that, but I've never flown internationally!

Batteries are a good idea, I generally don't use my laptop with just battery power, because the price of a spare makes me go eeeee! :) And I've never replaced the one in my Nintendo DS! I'm one of those people who want their own music and movies, which is what the laptop would do for me on the flight, along with my Sims 2.

I still haven't decided what airline to fly with, though I'm watching prices. We are discussing making the initial visit in September rather than July to try to save money on the ticket as well as save up more for the visit itself. It all depends on how much I'll end up paying to move my stuff back to my folks in Maryland.

Oooo.... one option I'm looking at for that trip is renting a van or something of that nature (that will carry my cedar chest and treadmill along with computers and a few other things I don't want shipped), and drive back east in easy stages. That way I can stop in Kansas City, MO and visit with family I haven't seen in many years and may not see again for a long time. That would be my uncle and his wife (who I've never met), along with various and sundry cousins (and *their* kids). And a possible stop further east in MO for my Mom's side of the family! :)) It all depends on how good a deal I can get on a rental van :)
