Hi, a certified copy is a notarized copy with a notary stamp. I needed very many of these for the skills asessment and main application!! These included my two university diplomas, high school diploma, grade transcripts, the syllabus listing all courses studied during 4 years of Johnson and Wales University, refrence letters from my two current employers and two former employers listing main tasks and duties and pay on company letterhead, birth certificate, and EVERY page of my passport!!  The agent needed 4 copies of each thing listed!! One copy needed the raised notary seal and the other three copies were made from this copy. My dining room table was awash in papers and forms for a long time! In addition to this I also put together a labled photo album with over 150 photos of me at work to demonstrate my skills. After all this I waited for the skills asessment approval letter. Then I proceeded to the main application itself with its additional forms. This hard work paid off and I leave in three days!! Jed :eggplant: :eggplant: :redpepper: |

Wow. That sounds like a TON of paperwork, Jed! I'm surprised you didn't go insane! It seems so overwhelming... So how do we get a notarized copy of the birth certificate if it's in Hawaii? Can his mother get a copy of the certificate notarized and then mail it to my boyfriend here in California? Or does he actually have to be present at the time the copy of the certificate is being made? Again, I apologize if this seems like a really dumb question. We've never had to do something like this before! *^-^* |

Typically, to get a notary to certify something as a certified copy, you have to show the original. If you can trust your partner's mother to do this, have her take the original birth certificate (along with a xeroxed copy of it) to a notary in Hawaii. The notary can certify the copy, and then she can mail it to you (I would recommend fed ex or some sort of certified mail service). The upside of this approach is that the original will not get lost in transit. Alternatively, you could ask your partner's mom to send you the original & you could take care of the certification part. As a first step, I would recommend getting your state and federal (U.S.) background checks done, since these can take a little while. There is some great advice on other threads in this section on how to best attack them. Also, print out the master list of all the documents you will need to have certified so that you can track everything. Like Jed, we had papers EVERYWHERE for a few weeks. Good luck!!! (and another congrats to Jed...I know you are going to love Melb!) |

Thanks, I can't wait to get to Melbourne! If you can believe I was working two jobs (and close to 60 hours a week at times) during the entire application process. This took great paitence and stamina at times. Starting a new life and job in a new country will be my next challenge. The birth certificate copy can be notarized in Hawaii and sent to you. Your boyfriend does not need to be there. Jed |

Thank you so much, Kristen! That sounds so much more easier than requesting a copy from the Australian government. :rollin: Where would I find the master list of documents that need certification? I thumbed through the immigration brochure but didn't seem to find any in there.

Chocopaws: Check out pages 20-21 of the 47SP application that you have to fill out. It has the masterlist. It's a lot of work to pull this stuff together, so just attack it piece by piece. Don't let the enormity of the whole assignment put you off. As Jed mentioned, he did his while working 60+ hour weeks. I filled mine out while chasing a toddler, tending to a newborn & working some crazy late night hours. You can, and you will, get this done! We are here to offer advice and encouragement! |
