Oh cool, so we'll be fine with only two forms... goodie!

And I don't submit them until they are requested, right?

We front-loaded ours with the application 8)

The FBI check comes back the same, just a rubber stamp "no record."

Congrats on your "no record!" :)

You have to submit your 888s along with your main application, so that's why it's important to get them started now! We only had two as well. I think if you target the people who know you/your relationship best, you'll be in good shape.

As for your relationship statement, we were advised to do ours as a statutory declaration, which means we had to have it notarized by a notary public. However, I don't think there is any requirement per se that says you must submit a notarized statement.

The most important thing is to make sure the essay is thorough and covers all aspects of your relationship, including how you divide housework and share finances. I remember having to harangue my husband into writing his, as it's a pain-in-the-butt to craft!

What you might want to do is write yours first, and then give it to your partner & allow him to use it as a reference point for writing his. When Sean saw the effort and structure I used in mine, that prompted him to dedicate some time to his.

In typical Kristen format, I was super thorough. Sean would have been happy submitting "So I met this American chick. She was cool. We got married..." but that wouldn't quite cut it! ;)

Good luck!

C:

Go back to that master check list of things that need to be included in your application (pp 20-21 of the 47SP form). You will see that the 888s are one of the items, along with your relationship statements. No call for the latter to be notarized.

Ohmigosh! I can't believe I missed that! I just automatically lumped it in with the "Spouse visa" section even though it clearly says "In all circumstances..."

Can you tell I'm a little scatter-brained right now? O_o

Ok... went through the document checklist more thoroughly... and I realized I don't know how to supply this:
Quote:

Evidence that you intend to marry your fiance within 9 months of being granted the visa.

Also, there are two separate sections I'm confused about:

Quote:

Evidence that your relationship is genuine and continuing

Quote:

Evidence that you and your fiance have met and are personally known to each other

I would think that both of those would be covered by the photographs of ourselves throughout our relationship doing various couple-things together... or is there something else I should include?

Again, sorry with all the questions. My only hope is that after this whole ordeal is over and done with, I'll be able to provide helpful information to someone else who has to go through the same thing. LOL

If you plan to get married in Australia, you need to have a celebrant or official that you've asked to officiate. That person then files a "Notice of Intended Marriage," which you send a copy of, with your application. You have to set a tentative date when and where you will be married, for him/her to include in the notice. So theoretically, it has to be sometime in that 9 months after your visa is granted, and you have to take a guess as to when THAT might be!
My (then) fiance visited a celebrant, and picked a date, and paid her $100 to file the NOIM. This has to be done, anyway, 31 days before you're married (in Oz). The date we picked, I hadn't received my visa yet, so she made out a new NOIM with a new (tentative) date... the date on it doesn't really matter, but filing the NOIM is the proof you need.

Yeah, your photos prove you've met, and in your statement about your relationship you can include other stuff, like what your plans are when you get married, etc, to show it's genuine and continuing.
Hope that helps.

Hey C:

Lisa offers some great advice. Other evidence you could include would be "save the date" cards if you've set a wedding date, any receipts you have from wedding planners, etc.

As for providing evidence that your relationship is genuine and caring, you could provide tons of stuff:

(Be sure to label everything PLEASE RETURN, unless you want to go through the hassle of submitting copies of everything)

Labeled photos from throughout your relationship
Emails exchanged between the two of you - particularly great if you can include ones that show you giving emotional support to your partner
Cards from friends & family congratulating you on your engagement
Phone bills
Letters or cards you've given to one another
Shared travel itineraries
Joint bank account statements or join bills
Social invitations/items sent to you jointly (like wedding invitations)

You don't need to submit ALL of those things, but the more meaty "evidence" you have, the better. My husband totally  rolled his eyes at how much corraborating evidence I provided, but my CO said that she had never seen such a thorough application. OK, maybe she was just trying to make me feel good, but I did give her a load of good stuff. Andie McDowell & Gerard Depardieu could have learned a thing or two from me! ;) (sorry, lame "Green Card" reference there)

Lastly, I also provided an "invoice" of all of the supporting evidence I provided, to make it easier for my CO to digest.

Good luck!

I swear, Lisa and Kristen... you guys should be immigration officers. I love how through and clear you both are!!!

Lisa - oh my gosh that's difficult... to choose a date when I don't even know when my visa will be granted. LOL But as long as they don't mind the date being wrong, it sounds simple enough. Heck, it would be nice if they processed my visa faster if I pick a date that's close enough. ;)

Happy to help! People here were very nice to me when I had a zillion questions.

As for wedding date (assuming you have the freedom to change it if you need to), how about the anniversary of your first date or some other "memorable date" in your history. It will make for great reading when you write up your relationship statements!

Keep asking whatever questions you might have. It feels good to help out another American go through the process.
