This is an old post, but I can recommend Porta Casa in Albert Park. Also Pepperonis on Elizabeth St (if you want a big American style pizza, though the crust is a bit sweet). These don't compare to a slice of pizza in NYC for me, but they've done the trick

I miss round crusty pepperonis instead of slivers of ham. Sigh ...

Try the NY pizza place on Fitzroy St. in St Kilda. I wrote about it before. Perhaps this was among the lost posts. It is good American style pizza. I am not sure if it exactly matches a good pizza made in NYC but it is the closest thing to an American pizza I have had here. This is very close to Albert park and tram 96 will take you to Fitzroy St.

My husband and I went out for pizza last week to escape the heat. It was soooooo disappointing! We were both saying how much we miss American pizza. And why isn't pepperoni more common here? Why just nasty salami most of the time? I like salami, but not on pizza so much.

I grew up in New England and you can get some really good pizza there!

We actually make pizza at home more often than not b/c it's better than what we can get elsewhere. And it's not like we are gourmet chefs!

4 things that I hate about the pizza here:
- the dough is too thick and is really doughy (not like deep dish)
- there isn't enough tomato pizza sauce on the base
- the cheese is bland
- the ham is that horrible super processed stuff...almost like spam

blah

The shredded ham pizza topping sold in stores and served on top of pizza here reminds me of Big League Chew. This is a shredded bubble gum that comes in a pouch to resemble chewing tobacco so kids can pretend to take a wad and chew just like baseball players. I remember seeing it as a kid and I don't know if it is sold anymore. Does anyone else remember this gum and think the same thing??

hah i remember big league chew! i always wanted it as a kid. thinking about it now.. what a nasty concept!

yeah, i'm yet to eat a really good pizza here. i have heard good stuff about aurthur's in sydney.. anyone had it?

i could care less about the meat..cause i don't eat it anyway. but they definately skimp on the cheese! and yeah, it's not very flavourful cheese at that.

I could get a whole pack of big league chew in my mouth at once...of course, I couldn't actually chew it then, but I did drool a lot.

While nothing here compares to pizza back home (what I would give for a nice pizza hall with long benches and cheap pitchers of beer!), the best compromise we have found is at a kebab shop...they use heaps of really good gooey cheese! We've completely given up on pepperoni though.

Now that you mention it, Jed, I agree!

I totally know what you are talking about, and I agree! Hence, we rarely order ham on pizza.

And what's with Aussies putting bacon on almost every type of pizza? And everything else for that matter????

What's wrong with bacon on Pizza? I ordered it that way all the time in the US (Canadian Bacon).

Now, BBQ sauce as a base, that's a real problem:)

A bit of bacon here and there is fine - but it's on almost all types of pizza it seems!!! There's no escaping the scary Aussie bacon!

I'm not even going to go there with the BBQ sauce on pizza bit. Just wrong.

LOL at the Big League Chew comment.... that's *exactly* what it looks like!

The thing that annoys me the most is the BBQ sauce base, how it seems to be standard on everything. It's not a big deal to simply say "sorry, I want the normal base", but I think it's kind of stupid to have that as your default.... I suspect the majority do this.

I'm also unhappy that all the Pizza Huts got replaced by Domino's.... yes, I know Pizza Hut isn't exactly gourmet, but I like it much more than Domino's.

This is a very amusing mental image.

On a side note, I did not know that the Pizza Huts were replaced by Domino's. My husband went down to Glenferrie Rd. the other day for lunch and got himself a Pizza Hut pizza. That's the closest we've been able to get to "American" pizza. He's coming to get me in FIVE DAYS. We are going to eat at Zachary's for sure - good ol' deep dish Chicago style pizza! With pepperoni! Such a novel concept. O_o

We've still got both Dominos and Pizza Hut in Perth, but Dominos here reeeally sucks.

Thankfully we've got Uncle Gino's down by Scarborough Beach, his pizzas are not too bad, except for, yes, the Big League Chew

There are a few Pizza Huts around on that side of town, but they're pretty much all gone in the western suburbs.

How on Earth does Domino's stay in business?? I've yet to meet ONE person who likes their pizzas.

I honestly can't stand pizza anymore. I used to eat Little Caesars long ago...then gourmet thin crust at small independent pizzerias in Milwaukee. I've never had a pizza here in Australia. I couldn't imagine ever eating pizza again....

I remember Big League Chew! Doubt it's sold anymore...too "incorrect" these days, I reckon... ;)
