Me neither. In fact, I've mentioned spaghetti squash a few times to my husband, and he's never heard of it. ![]() Hmmm this topic seems to be going the way of pumpkin pie and cooking, so I think I'll throw it in Tucker Time... |

I think the only canned pumpkin is at USAFoods.Pumpkin pie spice would be good to bring (as well as apple pie spice). Or you can easily make your own: Substitutions: 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon + 1/4 tsp ground ginger + 1/8 tsp ground allspice + 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg = 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice (eta: some people also add cloves) Lisa Edited by shylady, Oct 30 2008, 04:21:52 PM.

You might want to try and find a big "Queensland Blue" Pumpkin. They are a better shape than a butternut. I always said if I moved back to Aus I'd like to try carving a QLD blue - a perfect combination of Aussie produce and American tradition.

I would add that you don't need to buy canned pumpkin here because Queensland Blue and various other varieties are delicious to eat, and can be used in pumpkin pie. |

Yes, I have to agree peeling and chopping up pumpkin is hard work! However since I've never seen canned pumpkin, I put up with the work for the rewards. |

*nods* I can understand that, Judy. Though I've told Jason if he wants apple pie, he gets to peel the apples That's always my least favorite part, other than washing up. Which he'll also do as I do the cooking *grins* |

I've managed to turn my Aussie husband into a Halloween addict!! We do up our house and scare all the trick or treaters! I have a hard time finding orange pumpkins, so one year we carved watermelons. They were the right side and looked good, especially when you carved up a scary face and had the reddish meat for the background. Ours only lasted the night, and were a shrunken mess the next morning! Too much water content I guess. I've had to make homemade pumpkin pies since I've lived here, since you can't get pumpkin in the can. You can log on to the Betty Crocker website and get recipes for the filling and the crust. You can get Crisco at usafoods.com.au (haven't been able to find any Crisco here, and the substitues just don't work. Copha is just too hard, and too running if you melt it). After using several types of "pumpkin", I've decided that I like the Jap ones the best. I took them to work last year for Christmas Eve, along with a can of whipped cream. You should have seen the look of delightful suprise on all my Aussie coworkers. Pumpkin that is a dessert....unheard of in Oz!!! Everyone loved it and wanted the recipes! |

you can try bringing the pumpkin spice, but one of my girlfriends from the states tried to send me some, and Oz quarantine took it. Evidently, there is some spice in it that they wouldn't let through. |

I made 3 pumpkin pies about a month ago using a butternut "pumpkin"... and while the recipe turned out a bit thinner the flavor was very close to the Pennsylvania homemade pumpkin pie my family makes back home. The store-bought frozen pie crusts (flan?) were OK but the edges turned black in record time... less than 10 minutes! So next time I will put foil around the edge of the pie from the start. My fiancee absolutely loved the pie and can't wait until I make more... I will have to make at least 6 pies next time. 3 for at home, and 3 for at work (we both work at The Wesley Hospital in Brisbane) so 2 for all her nurse friends (she has heaps) and 1 for my co-workers to try. |

My Pennsylvania Dutch grandmother (Mom's side of the family, 1896-1982) always used a crooked neck pumpkin from Pennsylvania for her homeade pies. This resembles a long butternut squash curved in "C" shape. Pennsylvania Dutch people are famous for their great pies and home cooking. My grandmother could make pies from scratch without using any written down receipe. |

This is totally off topic but Jason,The Wesley was where I had my baby! I was in the ER there when I was about 34 weeks along with some kidney issues and I had an male american nurse looking after me.When I saw you post that you and your fiancee work there,it made me wonder if it was you! As for the pie,i've had the same thing happen, ill have to try the foil. |

I'm gonna try a recipe Lisa sent me Should be interesting!Just an aside... when Jason and I were grocery shopping the other day, I pointed out a pumpkin that would be a perfect Halloween pumpkin, other than being green. It did have some orange on it too. I said if they left it on the vine longer, it woulda been all orange, and Jason said he'd never thought about why the ones here aren't like the ones in the US! Gotta love 'em
