Thanks for the heads up.

The world can be a scary place. A girl in AL, a relative of a friend of mine -- disappeared from outside of a bar last week and it ended in the worst way possible. Really, really sad. Sick people are everywhere...

I'm not much of a drinker, which has raised some concern as to how I'll meet people, as that seems to be the most popular way amongst backpackers.

But thanks again.

Stories like that have always made me nervous about traveling alone. However, if you are smart enough to avoid those types of situations, you will have a better chance of not running into trouble. Be safe! We want you to be able to tell us all about your adventures. :)

I just spent 4 months alone in Central America, parents worry but they get over it

Not that I'm trying to push another forum (sorry Tors! ;) ) But the Bootsnall forums would probably help you with a lot of questions - it's a travel forum and there is ton of information, maybe a bit more specific to the sort of travel you want to do.

Having said that, I've done working holidays in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand so if you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

Thanks Jennifer! I actually stumbled across them in a fit of Google searches a couple days ago. There's a lot of valuable info there, and as you said, it is right up my alley. :)
