Hey guys - How does ( if you do that is) one celebrate Thanksgiving Down Under? I'm not seeing the large turkeys in the grocery store...I don't imagine that there is a huge demand for them here. We are under a debate in our house at the moment. I love Thanksgiving with all the trimmings... and for me it is the kick off to the Holiday Season (they're already under a blanket of snow and ice in MN). My hubby says don't do a thing. So if anyone has any ideas? We are in the Sydney area, is there a restaurant? Just trying to get some ideas flowing... what have you all done for Thanksgiving here? Thanks! Paula

Coles sells whole frozen turkeys. Mind you, turkey is very expensive in oz. Be prepared to about $60-$85 for a whole turkey. |

My roommate and I are having a Thanksgiving "party". We did it last year as well... we ordered a turkey from the local butcher. I think it was maybe $40? You can find pumpkin pie filling and the fried onions for green bean casserole at David Jones. Pretty much everything else you can get at any normal grocery store! |

I'm going to throw this into Tucker Time if y'all don't mind (unless you're actually proposing a meetup!) I've done Thanksgiving a couple of times. It's difficult when the traditional ingredients aren't readily available, but it can be done. Turkeys aren't too hard to find, but large ones are. Some people order them directly from a butcher. Just be sure that anything you cook can fit into your oven! I know mine is much smaller than the one we had in the States. LOL Last time I was in Sydney, I noticed that Sugarfix carried certain US food items like Stove Top stuffing. There's one in Castle Hill (we always go there and spend lots of $ ). Otherwise, yeah, DJ's Food Hall is the place to go.I think the American Society of Sydney and the Australian-American Association both do Thanksgiving dinners. Up here, there's an informal group of Yanks that meets up for various holidays and does pot luck. We went to Thanksgiving last year. It was nice, everyone brought something different so no one was totally put out. If you want to do it, then I say, why not!

the times i have been in australia for thanksgiving i didn't celebrate it made me really sad. but i didn't really know any other americans. however, i do traditional american thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings as either christmas day or new years day dinner :Di just get a small turkey from coles or woolies and then i make the stuffing from scratch myself. not a big pie eater, so i've never made pumpkin pie. though i LOVE pumpkin bread, so might splurge on a can of libby's and give it a go this year. maybe this year i'll do something though. |

This year I'm having a "Thanksgiving Feast" with our friends...it will be my first Thanksgiving in Oz so I'm going to give it a go. They all sounded excited about it considering they never celebrated Thanksgiving before...they asked me to e-mail them recipes that my family makes. I thought it was a great idea b/c that way I don't have to make everything. About that pumpkin bread you mentioned i<3sydney...anyone have any recipes for that (using Aussie products/measurements)? Cool! Thanks gang! I will take a closer look in Coles and Woolies. I am usually there with the little ones so I am frantically trying to get everything I need before one or the other of them gets "bored" and all mayhem breaks loose. I always feel like it's an episode of Lucille Ball when she and Ethel are at the candy factory and getting behind! |

sally i don't have a recipe using aussie ingredience. actually, i'll have to call my dad and see if he can dig out my families pumpkin bread recipe (that uses canned libby's). but i'd love to know what a good subsitute for that would be too! otherwise, i'm sure you can search for pumpkin bread on allrecipe.com |

You guys can use real pumpkin instead of canned. it's really easy- I did it last year to make pumpkin muffins. Just steam the pumpkin, peel off the rind and then mash it up. You'll have to know what seasons to add, but most recipes should tell you that! |

Yeah, I make candied yams the same way, except with sweet potatoes of course. I even use the pink marshmallows (the ones that taste normal):) Greg |

I saw canned Libby's pumpkin for sale in the David Jones food hall. USA foods would probably have it too. |

I find that turkeys come out usually in december, fresh or frozen, and are much cheaper then, although still expensive compared to in the states. Around Thanksgiving time, they really aren't out much, and they will be very expensive and frozen. Betty Crocker has good online traditional recipes for all the fixings. I would also suggest recipezaar.com for a pumpkin bread recipe. I have found tons of American recipes that I have converted and used here in Oz. Pumpkin pie is a little work, but using fresh ingredients make the pies taste so much better. |

I ended up ordering a carved turkey from this place in Melbourne: The Roast Kitchen A bit pricey like others have mentioned, but the guy on the phone was super helpful and the turkey comes with stuffing and cranberry dressing and gravy I have to work all next week, so there was no way I was gonna be able to cook a whole turkey in one go. But I'll let you guys know how it turns out, so far so good! |

i usually get my turkey from woolies. i just looked at a little one the other day and it was 3.2 kilos and $32 something. the next size up was $49 and i think there was a bit puppy for around $60. i'm not sure if i should get it now or wait to see if they go on sale. but then i run the risk of them being sold out. decisions decisions. |

As long as it will keep for a week in your fridge, I'd say go for it. Even if it does go on sale, you do run the risk of other people getting there before you and picking all the good ones. I must say, though, that is one expensive turkey! |

I can find frozen Steggles or Ingham turkeys here in Perth at IGA, Coles, and Woolies. Though NOT the 20+pounders I'm accustomed to, there's a lot of "size 36" (3.6 kilos= 8 lbs). I bought a "size 50" (5.0 kilos= 11 lbs) yesterday, for *gulp* $44.49 at IGA. Lisa |
