My husband casually mentioned the other day that he remembered beer being more expensive in Australia. This isn't good news for us, since we're poor and we like beer. We searched around on the Woolworth's website to see what the real damage is going to be, and it seems like the cheapest six-pack you can get is around $11!
Is that really the situation over there? If so, how do people get around it? There must be a way to get beer at home for less than $2 a pop, especially in a country that claims to love beer!
Maybe we'll become master home-brewers...

That's exactly it---you need to learn to homebrew, and loads of people do that here.

Beer is very expensive here. It's always best to buy it by the carton. It's a big hit at once but in the end it's significantly cheaper. This also goes in line with general living expensives in oz...it's just a very expensive place to live.

Speaking of beer, my favourites is Pure Blonde or if they don't have that I go for Crown. What is everyone elses favourite?

I quite like a couple of English beers I found - Wychwood Hobgoblin and Pale Ale.
And of course my old standby of Sam Adams. I was watching Gordon Ramsey's show 'The F Word', and he brewed some beer in a cask that had been used for bourbon. I'd love to try that with my homebrew.

Unfortunately beer is INSANELY EXPENSIVE here! My husband is a big Coopers fan and I think he pays like $40 per carton. Yikes.

I cannot handle full strength beer here but I realllllly like Cascade Light. It's my fave for sure!

Beer is very expensive, but minimum wage is much higher here, so I think a lot of these cost of living sticker shocks are sometimes exaggerated a bit. I've bought a Corona at a pub for 4$ at the cheapest, and 8 at the most. Nothing compared to the couple bucks back home, but then again, I make twice per hour here, so it I think it all works out to about the same in the end.

We find ourselves drinking more wine then beer these days and yummy is it good here!

James Squire Amber Ale is the best! It's also pretty expensive.

The best all around prices are at Dan Murphy's.

YEAH!!

Also a Coopers fan, and Cascade is okay too. And James Boag will do as well.

But my all-time fave is my own home brew.

Agree! Amber Ale is my Aussie drink of choice.

I was going to suggest Dan Murphy's as well.

Agreed - but taxes are also higher here. Especially if you come from a State with no or low state income tax.

Minimum wage may be higher, but

a) higher levels usually do not come with the level of pay you'd get in the States or elsewhere - this is one reason for the so-called "brain drain", uni-educated people leaving and going overseas where they can make more money!

and

b) for many people it still doesn't cover the difference for housing, food, clothing, transport, etc.

It really depends on what you're comparing, and you also have to factor in a whole lot of other things like taxes, country vs. city, etc. It's a lot more complex than people realise.

(sorry for the hijack, carry on!)

I like a Carlton or VB once on a while and I like Little Creatures too. I have seen home brew cannisters for sale in the supermarket but I don't know what other equipment is needed. I usually have a pot or a pint at a hotel (pub) and this costs anywhere from $3.60 to $8 plus. I can easily afford this a few times a week.

Beer is shockingly expensive here. Our solution is to drink it for dinner.

I miss Yuengling Lager.

Here, I reach for a Pure Blonde, Barefoot, or a classic Corona.

My husband and I make our own wine at home... each time, the batch yields 30+ bottles! Woo-hoo! There's NEVER a shortage of wine at my place.

Come.
Drink.
Be merry.

I love beer!!!

We have tried so many beers and I've yet decided on a new favorite. I know Pure Blonde is a low carb one here, but does anyone know what others are considered "lite" beers. :headscratch:

I was a big Miller Lite drinker at home; then went to Miller 64 (althought it was much like water), but had to keep the calorie and carb intake low. :nono:

When we first arrived the sticker shock of the price of a slab damn near killed me. However, we have quickly adjusted and when we see a slab of beer for less than $50.00 we're quick to "drive through" and grab it!

I must add that I do love the wines here in Oz and the prices make it even more enjoyable! :woohoo:
