We have tried so many beers and I've yet decided on a new favorite. I know Pure Blonde is a low carb one here, but does anyone know what others are considered "lite" beers. :headscratch:

You should try Tooheys New White Stag, it's a new low carb beer. A shameless plug, I admit, as I work for them- but it is really good!!!

I usually drink Pure Blonde but I was at a beerfest a few weeks ago and saw that they now have Michelob Ultra here - it was at the Cooper stand so maybe they are importing it, not sure about the back end side of things..? Being in Hobart if I'm not drinking Pure Blonde I drink Cascade beers, usually pale ale.

Not to beat a dead horse but I think its worth saying for people who are looking to move here because I think it can be confusing on the board - you often see two opposite opinions about wages/costs (like earlier in this thread). Pretty much if you were on the lower end of the pay scale back in the States (like me, I was a waitress) you'll find the wages to be a lot better in Australia. Also, I think in Australia it's easier to break into "professional" jobs without a Uni degree, so for me the wages are heaps better here. BUT, as incognito and Tori rightfully pointed out, if you are already in a decent earning, professional position you'll probably find the wages in Australia, combined with tax regulations, mean that you earn less here. (Hopefully most of you who are already here will agree with me?!?)

edited to add: BTW, I had NO idea that there were US states that didn't charge income tax!! I'm not sure what tax rate I paid in Maryland but I know that sometimes waitresses I knew (luckily I was a student and had some sort of learning credit) would owe taxes at the end of the year because our hourly rate ($2.38/hr) wasn't enough to pay our taxes (because we got taxed on our tips).

Anyone else a fan of Sapporo or Red Stripe? I love both beers, and of course, given my luck, they're both extremely hard to find around here. Meh... the damn sacrifices we make to live in this country!

My brother and I went to a microbrewer in Sydney last night, and it was Excellent!:) They have a great selection of beers and an explanation of each one:

I highly recommend this place to anyone who really likes beer, but can't find anything decent in Oz.

I only really like ales and the Organic Pale Ale was very good.

I visited the Mountain Goat microbrewery in Richmond a few times since my last post. Great beer with a lot of depth and complex favor. Dan Murphy's sells it in bottles and it is available on tap in and around Melbourne. Try the Mountian Goat Hightale Ale.

A 6 pack of Corona will cost you $18 at the Cole's Liquorland in Dee Why. I go for Corona or Pure Blonde. My husband likes all James Squire beer, but says that there is a surprising lack of quality beer options. We've heard of a microbrewery in or near the CBD called, "Red something". Beer is expensive, but it is a small price to pay for living in paradise! We drink a lot of wine and have even started a wine journal with labels in it.

That's the one I mentioned above, the Red Oak Boutique Brewery.

There's also the Lord Nelson hotel who make their own beer down at the Rocks. They have one called "3 Sheets" that I like.

And then there's the unholy county piggyback tax too! *shakes her head*

I don't drink beer, but I do love wine once in a while. I got hooked on Yellow Tail when I was still living in Phoenix :)

Oh, I will, Lisa, though not often :)

Veering off topic sorta: I swear, Miss Mouth (my dad's GPS) was trying the entire trip down here to take us off the highway to little side roads... and most of the time there was a winery there! The GPS is a lush! :rollin:

Anyone heard of this www.boozle.com.au

Not sure how well it works...kind of a cool idea though. You put in the beer you want to find and your suburb and it finds the cheapest place for you!

Beer is very expensive, but minimum wage is much higher here, so I think a lot of these cost of living sticker shocks are sometimes exaggerated a bit.
Minimum wage may be higher, but

a) higher levels usually do not come with the level of pay you'd get in the States or elsewhere - this is one reason for the so-called "brain drain", uni-educated people leaving and going overseas where they can make more money!

and

b) for many people it still doesn't cover the difference for housing, food, clothing, transport, etc.

It really depends on what you're comparing, and you also have to factor in a whole lot of other things like taxes, country vs. city, etc. It's a lot more complex than people realise.

(sorry for the hijack, carry on!)
I'd agree with the brain drain to Britain for higher wages....but to the US I would call it the curiosity drain...most would go there just to see if it was the same as the tele...and only some would expect fantastic wages to compensate for where they were living.

Hi and :welcome: , fish.02!

"Curiosity drain" might apply to casual tourists, but I was speaking primarily of migrants, whom I suspect have deeper reasons for uprooting themselves and their families. For some, certainly, higher wages is a major factor, and only one of many different factors.

Anyway, all of that is beside the point. Lovely to meet you! Feel free to post an intro in the Introduce Yourself section, so we can get to know you better!

ooooo Natasha, it IS really good! :woohoo: :lurve:
My sweetie brought some home for me to try for NYE.
(And what's even better is, it's got less than 1/2 the carbs as the new Bondi Blonde low-carb, that Paris is here promoting :rollin: )
And now you're quitting beer for 2 months???
I'll drink your share ;)
