I've found Goya cans of black beans at Martellis (fruit and veg shop) next to Coles or Woolies at the Rouse Hill Shopping Centre. They also have supplies of American candy such as twizzlers, reeses, almond m&m's and cinnamon gum!
wow seriously! I wonder if they still stock them there (the black beans that is, already knew about the candy & I get a can of Cherry 7up every time I am there too) . I am going this weekend to find out! :)
Unfortunately they stopped stocking the black beans, it's been over a month since they had any. But my hubbie chatted to them about it a few days ago and they were going to give us a ring back. They do stock lots of other goya beans though. We also talked to Dijon Foods in Castle Hill who stock the dried black turtle beans (Hellman's mayo and wild rice too), and they asked us to bring in a can of Goya black beans (for the barcode) to see what they could do....of course now I have to actually find a can first!!!

I can't remember if it was Martelli's (near Coles) or Country Growers (near Woolies) but they also used to sell the same dried black turtle beans (which was actually packaged in a Dijon Foods bag)....haven't looked for it there lately though.

I guess Woolworth's bought Macro (the wholefoods grocery store chain)? Now I have been able to find [dried] black beans in all the Safeways / Woolies I shop in. It is a light green bag - Macro brand - in with all the other dried beans, grains, etc. Found the same ones at Thomas Dux at The Glen. I put the whole package in a stockpot, cover with water, bring to a boil, then let soak overnight. Next day I drain and bring to a boil again and they are done quickly (1/2 hour?) I use about a half to a third in soup or chilli or burritos or rice n beans and then freeze a few seperate containers and it is nearly as convienent as having canned beans in the cupboard (and MUCH cheaper).

Harumph. I was hoping Whole Foods would buy the Macro chain for expansion into Oz, as the logo is so similar anyway. ;) But now I'll be on the lookout @ Safeway!

From what I can tell Woolworth's bought out Macro Wholefoods chain of stores (no relation to the US Whole Foods) and then closed and re opened them as Thomas Dux stores. Thomas Dux does have Macro Wholefoods branded items in their stores. Perhaps they are leftover items but I am not sure of this. Thomas Dux is very nice but a bit pricy for everyday shopping.

ALERT! ALERT! Canned, organic black beans for $1.99 / can at Food Works at Hawthorn Rd / Glen Huntly Rd! [ETA: That's Caulfield South, BTW]

That Food Works can be so random! I find such treasures in there sometimes! (Snyders of Hanover pretzels.) I have been warned by moms at school though to check "use by" dates on dips and stuff in the dairy section though ;-)

ALERT: THIS JUST IN!!!!
In Adelaide there is a place called Garganis Brothers on Bacon St, in Hindmarsh. That sells TONS of mexican and other ethnic items... we've finally found a place to get canned black beans and habanaro sauce. Just found it and can't wait to explore more!!

I ended up finding dried black turtle beans from a gourmet distributor in Castle Hill called 'Dijon Foods'. They also stock real maple syrup and 1kg bags of pancake mix.
Is the pancake mix made here or elsewhere?

The Pancakes on the Rocks place has some literature that says that waffles and pancakes taste different here than America due to wheat germination differences. So far I have not had a good waffle or pancake in Oz:) Though, the Pancakes on the Rocks place is OK.

Greg
Lou Jack's on South King here in Newtown has good pancakes - very light and fluffy, and served with blueberry compote and plain yogurt (maple syrup is available). It's pure heaven with their Turkish coffee. They also have a yummy-sounding sandwich menu.

I wonder if the Foodworks near my place will have the black beans. I went yesterday, but oh well, it's only a 5-minute walk!
