A new American franchise has just opened their first restaurant in the Sydney area. It's in Crows Nest, just a quick hop over the bridge on the Lower North Shore, and it's called The Counter. (www.thecounterburger.com)

It is AMAZING. You can make your own burger with your choice of bun, cheese, toppings, sauce, and it's huge and delicious! Sides include fries and onion rings, served with bbq sauce and ranch dressing. They also have chili cheese fries and real American milk shakes / malts. Drinks are served in large glasses with ice, and there is normal ketchup and mustard on the tables. (They serve turkey, chicken and vegan burgers for you weirdos who don't eat red meat.) ;)

Service is fast and good, and the restaurant is very chic with seating indoors and out. It is also licensed, if you want an alcoholic drink with your monster burger.

I highly recommend it - and trust me, you won't want to eat again for hours! The burgers are HUGE!

Cool! Sounds a lot like Fudruckers or Wallbangers. Anyone remember those?
Thanks for posting!

Funny, I just heard about this today. I never even knew these existed in America until I saw someone talking about it on Facebook. Seriously thinking about checking it out. =)

Ooh, I went to a Fudruckers for the first time just over a week ago. The burger was yummy! And I had my first ever American milkshake, which is like an Aussie thickshake.

I think I'm going to take my friend to the one in Chicago when she comes to see me in May. =)
BTW, Fudruckers is amazing. <3 We don't have those around here anymore.
And speaking of milkshakes, I love the shamrock milkshakes from McDonald's - special for St. Patrick's Day! :D

Damn, now I have a moral dilemma....that sure sounds yummy, but that location used to be my favorite drinking establishment, and when it closed down, I swore I wouldn't patronize whatever went in there...listen to my tummy or my pride? Well, that's an easy decision.

Jen and I went there last night with her sister.

I give it two thumbs up:)

Burgers were very tasty, definitely American style. We also had fried onion strings, French fries with beef and chili (I wish they just called this Chili cheese fries:) and Jen and I had malts. I had a chocolate one and she had banana.

The Chili cheese fries were the absolute best. I haven't had anything like that here in Oz that tasted right to me. Usually things like that are two tomatoey if that's a word.

The burgers were cooked to order (we all did medium well)., However, they came back what I would call Medium to medium-rare. Lots of pink in the middle. They had plenty of american like toppings such as american cheese. Lots of Ozzie toppings too, so they don't feel out of place:)

The American cheese tasted pretty close. The burger had a very nice char grilled flavor. The fried onion strings were good, but I felt they could be better if they were actual rings, and a little thicker. The sauces for the burgers were a bit lackluster, I had a horseradish/mayo, and Jen had a chili sauce. Neither had very strong taste, which may or may not be good for you. I was expecting a bit more of a kick, like the horsey sauce at Arbys.

The Chocolate malt I had was very good, but I didn't think it was chocolatey enough. It had a very mild chocolate flavor. Jen liked her Banana malt, but it wasn't to my taste. Seemed like the wrong combination to me.

Overall it was great food, with a little american style:)

oooh see i love the skinny onion rings. :) And try the soy ginger glaze. It's GREAT! We're going tonight with Andrew's friends. I already know exactly what I am getting on my chicken burger :)

I am glad people are going and enjoying it. I absolutely loved it, and my hubby's office has made it a regular Friday lunch spot.

It was reviewed in the Telegraph today and they totally slaughtered it, which made me angry. But as long as people are going and loving it, it will stay in business! :D

I can see why Aussies wouldn't like it and thus why they would give it that horrid review. We love it for all it's "American-ness", which is probably exactly why they hated it!
