Are you talking about 'Mexican' food, or Taco Bell food?

You know, sometimes you just have to be creative when you want to make food that tastes like "back home." You might not be able to find all of the ingredients that you are used to, but that just provides an opportunity for you to create a few new recipes! Sam, for the hot peppers and tamarind you like to cook with, check out the Asian markets. Tamarind is used in the foods of many cultures, so you should be able to find it. Talk to the produce people at the Asian markets and tell them the kind of peppers you want (especially the amount of heat or smokiness you're looking for). They can probably recommend peppers that you could use. Also, do some research on the names of the spices/veggies/peppers you like. It is quite common that they'll be called something else in Australia. Tortillas are easy to make and taste so much better than store bought (it's also cheaper to make them yourself). Making tortillas is also a great group activity because while you're working on the other dishes someone else can be mixing the tortilla dough, rolling out the tortillas, and cooking them on a griddle. Fixing a from-scratch Mexican meal would be a great way to attract other people from the dorm to join you for a meal and to get to know them better. Amazing friendships develop when you "break bread" (or "tortillas" ) together.Have fun experimenting! |

HAHA. That's true. Sorry guys no Taco Bell recipes I can think of right now---but I really could go for one of those "Mexican Pizzas" One of my favourite things about Taco Bell is that the staff never get surly if you want to alter the food a bit. Like for myself I take the red sauce and beef (replace with bean) out of the Mexican Pizza and nobody gives me mess for it. Ah I too miss Taco Bell at like 2 am

This is true. I promised my Singaporean roomates real Mexican food one day, so when that Chili Mojos reopens in Adelaide I'll have to deliver on that promise. Sometimes I made tortillas but could never get them in that perfectly round shape---maybe one day I'll get one of those presses

Hi all- relatively new to this site, but if anyone is looking to find a place in Sydney that sells Mexican food products, then try Fiji Market on King Street in Newtown. They have canned chipotles in adobo, masa flour for tortillas and tamales, canned tomatillos, dried peppers (have seen chipotles, guajillos and anchos so far), and various other mexican goodies! I have since been able to duplicate some of my favorite mexican receipes so far such as Chile Verde (stewed pork stew with tomatillos), as well as home made corn tortillas enchiladas, with a homemade enchilada sauce (using the guajillos dried peppers)...! Have ended up using store bought tortillas which seem to work just fine.
