Today I applied for interdependency in person so I figured I'd fill you all in. My medicals and police certificates from the AFP, FBI, and Oregon were already done, nothing too special there. I lived in Nicaragua for 15 months during the last 10 years. So I need a police certificate from there. Every single lead I tried to follow ended in not being able to get one. I emailed Nicaraguan Federal Police 3 times (no response at all), I called Nicaraguan Federal Police ("You have to be a permanent resident or citizen of Nicaragua to get one, and then you have to apply in person in Managua"), I called the US Consulate for Nicaragua ("We have no idea, they're Nicaragua's laws"), I called the Australian Embassy in Mexico that has purview over Nicaragua ("We have no idea, just tell immigration you can't get one"). Anyway, the end result being that it's fairly clear that even if I were to fly to Managua, I would be refused a certificate because I'm not on their books as a perm resident or citizen. So, when I lodged my application, I explained the situation to the case officer. She was very nice and seemed understanding, but said that she needs to have the office in Canberra double check and supply a waiver. She didn't even take a large chunk of the evidence I supplied because she was so obviously convinced that our relationship was genuine ("I don't need to see that, thank you."), and she gave us a fairly clear indication that "Once the Canberra office gets back to me, then I will make a decision." The reading between the lines was fairly clear that she was ready to approve it except for the waiver. She also thanked us at least 3 times for having such an organised application and for having everything ready. She said that she loves applications like this. I would highly recommend GLITF, as they're the reason I was so prepared. ![]() Timeline: April 2nd - Called and made an appointment to apply in person. May 25th was the soonest available. Early May - Got the last of my police checks back (FBI) May 25th - Lodged Application, waiting on waiver from Canberra for missing Nicaraguan police certificate. June 25th - Called case officer and was given a new two week time frame. June 26th - VISA GRANTED (but I didn't know about it). June 30th - Received Visa Grant Letter. Yeah, no word yet, but I just keep thinking, "What can they really do?" They'll call Nicaragua and then get told the same thing. I guess the biggest thing could be them getting an Interpol check done or something else equally bureaucratic. I thought I'd be more worked up about this. I was SOOOO nervous when I was waiting for the 457 to be approved, but this is pretty much life as normal. I have permission to work, so if it takes a few months then it really doesn't worry me.

Called the case officer today. She still hasn't heard anything from Canberra, and told me to wait another two weeks. |

Yup, that was the point. We got our gay visa!! Quick, let's go have dinner at the most annoyingly heterosexual and/or lesbian dinner location possible!! A wacky sense of humour is certainly something we share. ![]() Thanks everyone. |

Well... honestly, I thought you were going to say you just went for the Americanesque food. Isn't that why people go there? Oh wait... ![]() |

Maybe I should explain. When Hooters first opened in Sydney, a lot of people queued up 'cause it was the only place that you could get something 'American'. We used to laugh about people only going there for the food - wink-wink-nudge-nudge. Anyway, that was quite awhile ago and I keep forgetting that some wouldn't remember that, sooo... yeah, sorry. ![]() |

Actually, Tors, I was easily able to accept that an American in Australia might try a Hooter's in Sydney for the 'Americanesque' food -- perhaps fried cheese with marinara sauce (which is NOT seafood-based!)? etc. And then there's the other aspect ... the reason SOME people go there. Can't help it, Tori, just pokin' atcha. ![]() |
