I just got my hair cut today and looooove my hairstylist, which got me thinking ... I thought it'd be nice for us to have a place to tout our favourite beauty service finds. I'll start. In Melbourne, I go to Caterina DiBiase at Heading Out Salon. She's at the Fitzroy location 2 days a week and Camberwell 2 days a week -- though they have about 5 locations around the city. Caterina's won all sorts of hairstyling awards and charges a BOMB, but the thing is she's also the franchise's creative director AND she's in charge of their hairstyling academy and is a serious perfectionist (she spent a good 20 minutes this afternoon AFTER I thought the cut was finished, scrutinizing my hair and making microscopic snips before she was satisfied) so I'm sure that any stylist under her tutelage is more than up to snuff. She does some amazing colour as well. I'm seriously picky about my hair, too, so I'd like to think that my means something. ![]() Anyone else out there got someone / some place to recommend? |

Omg I'm so glad you found someone good there, Kim, cause I went to the same place back in May and they almost destroyed my hair colour. If I do decide to ever go back I'll go to that girl only! The colorist I had was awful! Too bad I can't remember her name... I've had a facial at Endota spa in the CBD and REALLY enjoyed it. Not too pricey and they give lots of discounts if you're a regular. They also have quarterly champagne girls nights where you get to go in and have free massages and test their products and make up with the reps from the companies. Pretty fun girls night out! They also offer a "bloke" package for boys who like massages and facials (like the metro Aussie boy I moved here for, oh dear!) I can recommend "Waxed" in Elsternwick as I've only gone to them since I moved here (first place I learned to drive more than down the street to the grocery store) and they specialize in...ummm...girly bits I am about to try a place more local next week, "Essential Skin Clinic" in Flemington for my waxing and gonna get a consultation for laser hair removal...they offer discounts during off peak appointments on Mon-Wed 9-3pm for any mums or dads or shift workers like myself I've heard good things though from some friends who live around these parts...Nails....fabulous little shop in South Melbourne called "Pearl Nails" on Clarendon Street. They do a mani/pedi for $45 which is one of the cheapest I've seen in Melbourne...then again I haven't looked very hard because they do a fabulous job everytime and its never super busy and they take walkins. Ok now that you guys know all my little beauty secrest back into my hole :P |

Ewww, Julie, I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience at Heading Out -- so I'll retract my blanket recommendation for the salon and just push Caterina. ![]() I'll be curious to hear what you think about Essential Skin Clinic. I was halfway through an IPL regimen when I moved here, and I'd like to finish it out! |

For those of you in the sticks like me, I can recommend "Cuts Only" for hairdressing. It's a budget (cash only) place, but they're pretty good. The girls in there do amazing colour. I've also been getting my hair cut there recently, and they do a great job. Much better than the local Hairhouse Warehouse! As for spas, I've been to quite a few. My favourite is still Natskin. I've been to the one in the Yarra Valley, Ringwood and South Melbourne. All are equally nice, but I prefer the one in the Yarra Valley. The others can be a bit noisy due to being in the centre of suburbia. Aurora Day Spa in St Kilda is also pretty nice. They're very pricey, though. Can't give any recommendations for nails, though. No point in me getting 'em done...they just get destroyed the second I start working anyway!

This is a great topic! I would love to hear about recommendations for Perth for hair, nails, etc. Also, if there are good places for guys to get their hair cut, too. My husband is moving to Perth next month and it would be nice to have a place or 2 I can let him know about. Tina |

Hey Tina! I was just in Perth recently, and my sister-in-law and I got our nails done at this place called Proffesionail (the one on the upper level) in Karrinyup Shopping Centre. It's one of those budget places, but it was pretty good. The managed to take my horrid excuse for nails and make 'em look great! I've also been to Revive Day Spa in Mt Hawthorn, which was EXCELLENT! Still one of the best massages I've ever received. Hope that helps! |

i'd be interested in hearing any sydney recs. i've been here nearly 2 yrs and i still am yet to find any place i am loyal to for any beauty services. i had the best aesthetician EVER back home for over 10 yrs and it was terrible to leave her. i haven't had a wax yet i've truely been happy with i consistently end up disappointed or going home and finishing the job myself. (granted i do just go to cheaper places in my local shopping centre for convenience sake, but if i had a rec, i'd be more apt to travel)looking for someone who is good and reasonable. that's all i ask! preferably in the eastern suburbs or city. ps talking facial wax (eyebrows etc.,.) i'm interested in checking into laser removal also for later down the track. as for hair, meh, my mil cuts it. but i really should get it done properly. and a few grey's are sprouting so eventually i'll have to take the plunge and get a colour! so it'd be nice to have recs for that as well. don't really get mani/pedi's though. however, i had one back home and it was lovely! if there was a good/reasonable rec would possibly do it for a special ocassion if i can justify the expense

I have a few recs for Sydney: Pelo in Newtown- the two girls there, Kelly and Bridget, are both awesome! One usually does my cut, the other my highlights. It took me over two years to find someone I love and trust, and they are definitely it! On King St, about halfway between the Newtown station and the St Peters station. It's $200 for cut and half head of foils. I also love Ayurve salon in the city (99 York St)- I go there for a pedicure when I want to be spoiled ($60- but so worth it! I wouldn't go there all the time though) and I get massages there a lot too. About $85-90 for a 60 min massage. I've had a wax there as well, and it was great- but I've moved on to laser now. http://www.ayurve.com/ I go to the City Laser Clinic for that, it's in Martin Place. I hate the experience with an absolute passion and cry like a little girl every time I go. But I am pretty sure I would do that no matter where I went, so I would still recommend them. They put up with me and my tears, so that's gotta count for something. |

Ugh...that so reminds me of the other day! I went to this beauty/waxing place in Knox that came highly recommended. I needed an eyebrow wax and colour done. (Yes folks...colour! I'm naturally blonde, but I dye my hair coppery brown. Doesn't look too hot when you have light-arsed eyebrows!) Now...we'll ignore the fact that, I swear, she took off some skin as well. The overall result of the waxing bit was fine. The real disappointment was the dye job. Not only did she dye them waaaaaay too dark, but you could see a layer of the dye on my skin after she was finished! Thankfully, scrubbing the crap out of my eyebrows with facial wash helped. And, the colour has finally faded enough. Needless to say, I won't be going there again! |

I really, really do cry. And I even use the numbing cream! But I've been told I'm a big baby- I don't think most people find it so painful. But I would like to point out that I've had my tongue pierced and two tattoos- and I did not cry during either of those experiences! It's not pleasant, let's put it that way.... |

Natasha, I'm with ya. I've had cartilage piercings, nose piercings and two tattoos also (this was back in the day ... [sigh] the good old days ) but laser treatments can be wincingly, tearfully painful. What was I saying about needing to finish my round? ![]() Also, if any of you Melbourne gals have been to Aesthetica in South Melbourne, let me know what you think of them. I've heard good things and am curious about them for facials/peels/microdermabrasion. |

Laser hair removal is the shit! Yeah, it hurts like a m-f'er, but when you're done, you're done. No more waxing, no more buying razors or shave cream - nothing. Glorious! Totally worth it! |

Yep, agree Minx! I was just going to say to Dev and Amy that it IS worth it!! It hurts like hell for the ten, fifteen minutes it takes, but the pain is gone as soon as it's over and it is totally worth it!! |

Nodding, nodding, nodding ... I only had 4 treatments in Austin, the last being about 2 years ago, and I barely ever have to shave under my arms anymore, and a lot less in the bikini area as well. I'm looking forward to finishing up, even given the ... um ... let's just say discomfort.

On the laser thing, I started out getting it on my legs, too, but after two treatments I was getting the same old hair growth so I stopped it. Technician said it was probably b/c the hair on my legs was too light to attract the laser. Anybody had luck with lighter hair and laser treatments? |

Kim, I have super light hair too - and light eyes. My place told me the lighter your eyes and hair, the worse luck you'll have with getting it to work. She said probably two extra treatments behind the norm (which is seven or eight, I think), plus turning it up higher each time (lovely) would help. I haven't had it on my legs though. Maybe you can talk to them about those options?? |
