Since this is shopping related I thought I would share this here! My laptop died a few months ago so I've been looking around for something new. I only use my computer for the internet and iTunes, and I'm on a bit of a budget, so I thought maybe a netbook would be a good alternative. For those of you who don't know, a netbook are those little tiny laptops you see around I went to Harvey Norman and the guy was a real tool, he pretty much told that all netbooks were crap and that I would only be able to open one page at a time while browsing the web and that there was no way that I'd be able to run iTunes and surf the web. He tried to upsell me to a $2500 laptop. What he was telling me didn't really match up with what I'd read on the web, so i decided to call Dell and they were really helpful. I bought a new Inspiron Mini, with a 2 year warranty, bluetooth and shipping for $600. For that price, if it only lasts 2 years I'll be happy! I've had it for a few weeks and so far I'm really happy, I'm able to run a few programs simultaneously and I've had no problems at all. The only downside is there is no CD drive, so I have to rip CD's on my other computer and put it on a USB to get it onto this netbook, but honestly I download most of my music so its not an issue. I only have Microsoft Works installed too, not Office, but I rarely used Office on my old computer since I don't use my personal computer for work. I just thought I'd share in case anyone else was wondering what the new netbooks are like. I should probably also add that the same computer is going for around $300 in the States. I thought about waiting til I go home in November to get it but I wanted it now!!

I've been wondering about getting a netbook. Can you make phonecalls using Skype on your Inspiron Mini? |

I had an Acer Aspire One with Windows XP on it, and the only thing that it wasn't fast enough for was coding. It had a webcam and mic and worked great with Skype making video calls and the lot. Then it got stolen.

I'm a programmer. I use computers to their fullest. It's not what most people in the world would be doing with their netbooks, I assure you. ![]() The only thing that I wanted on it was a bigger screen, so I'd recommend at least 10" personally, but it was usable at 9". |

That is pretty much what got me thinking about a netbook - I realised how little I actually use a computer for! I think most of my computers have been really under-utilised . I use mine to surf the web, shop online and listen to music - not much else!
