Cost of restaurant dining; Not really more than Seattle

There's a pretty good Turkish take out place on Bay St in Brighton.

Anyway, pizza is twice as dear and not nearly as good as in NY. I just ordered Indian take out (quite good) for 4 people and it was $110. I have never paid anywhere near that in Manhattan. I shouted myself and three other adults to a roll up your sleeves Italian on Lygon Street which cost me around $225. Again, it's far more expensive than my haunts in Chelsea and the West Village - and not as good.

Yeah, the rationalization starts to break down with take out because then you don't have to add the 20% tip to the comp meal in the US ...

Mergellina on Glenhuntly Rd has good, basic Italian - an entree size risotto is plenty enough for a main meal for me and the pizza is good. Best pizza I've found though is Sabatinos on Hawthorn Rd (by Princes Park) in Caulfield S - v. thin crust and good toppings.

When your in Sydney look up the cheap eats guide on the net, their are 1000's of cafes where main courses are 10- 15 dollars. Newtown, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst and Bondi Beach are the best areas to have a filling three course meal, live entertainment and drinks for $40 a head.

I agree with Lisa66 that pizza at Merghellina's on Glenhuntly Road is good, but I don't like any of their pasta dishes or other food - it's a bit fatty.

It's hard to compare Melbourne with New York (or even SF or LA) for take out food - I think those 3 American cities are the meccas of take out.

I remember being taken to the most wonderful vegetarian restaurant in SF where they served me a huge main course salad unlike anything I've ever seen.
