Hi All, We're most likely moving from San Francisco area to Perth early next year (Jan 2010). We're exploring the idea of taking our 75 lb (~35 kg) 7 year old golden retriever with us. We're on top of the game with certified rabies tests and such, so we'd be shooting for the minimum 30 days of quarantine period in Perth. Does anyone have any recommendations for dog-moving service providers? Anyone have experience with visiting their dog(s) while in quarantine? what about exercise for them? How is renting a house/apt with an animal in Perth? In CA-Bay Area it is extremely difficult to find a good balance between somewhere you want to live and a landlord that will allow pets. And then they impose weight restrictions <45 lbs.... Are the parks dog friendly? Any other general comments? Cheers, GMK P.S. Although I've tried to search the forums, I haven't found much on dog relo yet. Point me to the relevant posts? |

A lot of people seem to use IPTLAX.....but I think it's a waste of money if you are in Cali. We moved from New Orleans but drove to Cali first to see family and we did everything ourselves the only thing a pet transport company does is check all your paperwork.....but the usda checked it all for us anyways. So I think if you are in Cali and you use a pet transport company it's kind a waste of money. We visited our dogs twice a week in quarantine and it seems to make them a lot happier the carer there also said it's the best thing someone can do is visit them. You can take them for exercise once a week they have a closed in grass area that they loved! you can take them treats and all that good stuff. any questions just ask it really wasn't that hard to move them you have to do everything if you use a pet transport company or do it yourself so I just decided to save a couple grand and drop them off at LAX. There is also a cool dog park right across from the freight terminal that they played at for a few hours before the flight Adam |

Perth is one of the most dog-friendly cities I've ever seen There are parks everywhere, complete with poo-bags hanging on bins, and there are dog BEACHES! If you go down the list of topics here under, "How do I..." you'll find several people's dog-shipping experiences. Good luck! Lisa

RE: dog-friendliness - I assume Perth isn't much different than Melbourne ... we had no trouble finding a dog-friendly house to rent. Most houses' yards here are fully fenced (at least in inner suburbs) so our pooch actually has a better set up here than he did in Seattle. Nearly all the parks around us in Melb have off-lead areas and there are dog beaches. |

Hi There! This reply is probably a little late but I just got registered with this site. My partner and I moved to Perth from Phoenix, AZ in Feb, 2009 for his work. We are scheduled to be here until June of 2011 at which point we will be returning to the USA. We moved a 2 cats and a dog down here successfully. The quarantine process was not as bad as I thought. I was able to go visit them every weekday. (the visiting hours are limited to 1 hour per day 11:30-12:30.) I made the approx 30 mile drive each day. The animals are treated well and the staff is nice. The hard part is having to say good bye each day and hearing the noise of other dogs when all the visitors are arriving. They have excercise yards that you can take your dog out into for 30 minutes each day so you're not stuck just visiting him in his quarters. We used a service to move them. Go to petsfly.com. I don't know if they provide services in California but Jeni Redmond who worked with us in Arizona was great. Everything came together just fine. It was quite pricy but the pricing is adjusted for how much of their services you need such as taking the animal to vet appointments, etc. My partners company paid for this. The total price was $6000. I like the "adventure" aspect of living in another country but get ready to miss a lot of USA things. The biggest issue is that decent climate control (central heat and central air conditioning) are not typically found in tract houses. Instead you will find ducted evaporative cooling and not heating system. People here use portable gas or electric heaters and only heat small areas of their homes. Traditional USA style centralized climate control does exist but it's far and few between in the properties here. I don't mind the evaporative cooling only so much but I HATE not having proper central heating. The winters here are mild but not THAT mild. Anyway drop me a line on how your move is going. My email address is allangates@hotmail.com Sincerely, Allan Edited by allan, Feb 9 2010, 10:43:31 PM.

Hi Again, I forgot to answer the second part of your question. Our dream was to live in South Perth but it proved nearly impossible to find a place that would allow pets. We ended up in a new house in Canning Vale that allowed the animals. It worked out well for my partner as his job is in Canning Vale. Our lease is up this month and we are considering moving to another house in Canning Vale (for various reasons). More of them than not will say no pets but there is one I'm going to look at this weekend that says "pets welcome". So rentals that allow pets ARE out there but maybe not right exactly where you want to move. |

If you use Firefox, or are willing to start using Firefox for this purpose, there's a plugin that's great that will find pet friendly rental listings in domain.com.au or realestate.com.au results: http://www.petfriendlyrentals.com.au/ I found it worth the money. |

Thank you all for the great comments, you've been very helpful. For those interested, our move to Australia has been postponed indefinitely. 2 weeks ago we decided to accept a transfer to Europe with my current employer, instead of a competitors offer in Perth, for the next year or so. Thanks again for all the helpful information, this forum is great! Anyone know of a similar forum for Italia? |
