First of all, here's the article: http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/11/19/florida.burned.boy/index.html Now, I'm sorry, but the old Dev has to come out for a while because one particular part of this article INFURIATES ME!!! It reads as follows: ------------------ Gordon Weekes, the attorney for Bent, denounced the fact that the teens were charged as adults. "It's been decided by society that a 15-year-old can't vote, can't join the armed forces and cannot buy alcohol, because society has recognized that children do not have the ability to appreciate the long-term consequences of their actions," he said. "But they can treat them as adults in court, when we have very capable remedies for them in the juvenile justice system, which is geared toward rehabilitation," he said. ------------------ I'm sorry, but this is the lamest-ass defense I have ever heard in my life! There is a HUGE difference between not knowing that you shouldn't drink to excess and not knowing the consequences of SETTING SOMEONE ON FIRE!!! Fifteen years old is MORE than old enough to know that this is fundamentally wrong! See, folks! This is why I can never become a lawyer. My signature phrase would be, "Are you fucking kidding me?!" |

So you'd just need to be a prosecutor.

Exactly!whoa... this kid was on a ventilator for a month. 65% of his body burned? Speaking as an old EMT-P, he's very lucky to be alive. |

LOL My coin phrase would still be, "Are you fucking kidding me?!" Not exactly the best reaction, but the most natural in these circumstances! |

It would be interesting to conduct an experiment have the two kids that set him on fire stand in front of a stove and have someone try to force their hands onto it when it is on high. If they pull their hands away then they are guilty as shit in my book, and move directly on to sentencing. The defense is as week as piss weak as Coors Light . |

Around age 10 I suffered 1st through 3rd degree burns over about 25% of my left arm. At 65% of body, I'm not sure I would even want to survive... Even with all the advances in treatment, it's a horrible and painful injury with long recovery. Stories of anyone being badly burned, and especially kids, really hits me... |
