Hey gals/guys,

Just thought I'd give a quick update.

60 days before the anniversary date, we received the packet identifying the information that needed to be supplied. The letter advised the current processing time is 6 - 8 months. I gathered up everything and returned it.

4 days after our anniversary date, I received a phone call from my CO. She advised that they needed more information (rules changed, partner needed to supply a police clearance as well). She advised it would take approx. 3 weeks to receive the clearance, so she expected to receive it within a month.

We applied the next working day for the police clearance. It arrived exactly two weeks later. The next day I posted it to DIAC.

Two days later, our visa was granted. I received it in the mail today. :woohoo:

So, even when you count the time waiting for the police check, it took 23 days to process. Less than a month! Well done, DIAC!

Just a little bit of encouragement for those of you applying/about to apply.

Congrats! :) I applied in person and got it approved in 15 minutes. ;) (Sorry, Tors!) I think I just got lucky, though, as I reckon they needed to fill some sort of quota that day.

Yeah, they were definitely short on their "Americans from Oregon who actually like Canberra" quota. I hope I get the same luck when mine comes around!

that is absolutely fantastic! i'm eagerly awaiting that envelope (as we married end of feb and applied early march)

i want to get everything out asap, so i better start gathering now actually! and maybe then those of us on the 2nd stage should apply early for our police clearances for our partners now that we know we'll need to?

very encouring news, thanks for sharing.. and congrats!!

I received my packet earlier this month. There was nothing in my application about my spouse needing to apply for police checks. Was yours a special case, or have the rules really changed? I just posted my application to the AFP today, too. :(

From memory they only require the AFP check for the Aussie partner when there are children involved in the relationship. I could be wrong, and it'd certainly be worth a call to immigration to find out.

chocopaws, I'm quite sure that's correct. My husband didn't need one, either. :goodonya: 8)

My defacto partner had 2 kids from a previous marriage who were living with us full time during my residency application process and he never had to get any AFP clearance.

My husband and I have been married for 13 years and our application took about twice that long... go figure... plus hubby did need to supply a police clearance thingy as well. Congrats on getting things done - yet another person from the Pacific Northwest - awesome!

It's a really recent rule. When did you go through your second stage?
