Shoes are so expensive here? Has anyone come across a store brand or a place equivalent to DSW? I bought a pair in some store in Chinatown a few weeks and they have already broken. They sold mostly ballet flats in the entire store. I need more quality stuff without breaking the bank! Also, has anyone come across a brand store that has similar lotions to Bath and Body Works? I'm running out and would hate to pay ridiculous shipping to have it all sent over... Thanks! Happy Holidays! Kimberly |

I hear ya, Kimberly. On shoes, I haven't found a DSW-type place yet. I've just resigned myself to paying through the nose for quality shoes. Hopefully someone else will chime in with ideas. The Body Shop has stores here, and for an Aussie brand you might try Lush. They don't have nearly as broad a selection as Bath & Body Works, but they're not bad. Again, maybe someone else has suggestions ... Sorry I couldn't be more help. It' a long process, finding adequate substitutes for all the brands and items you used in the US that aren't available here. Edited by KimInMellie, Dec 23 2009, 05:42:08 AM.

I walked into Kathmandu to buy some biking shorts and suffered from sticker shock. I was wearing a pair of Saloman shoes from REI that costs 2.5 times more in Kathmandu. We've seen our same SPD bike shoes in various stores for over twice what we paid for them in the states. The Aussies just don't have the buying power of the U.S. Only 20 million total, only 4 million in Sydney compared to 270 million in the U.S. |

Not exactly upmarket, but I've found lots of good shoes at good prices at Rivers... Other than that, I either buy on sale or in the US.

Thanks all. I gave in and took advantage of the 30% "sale" at Country Road. Otherwise, I think I will stick to Shoebuy and convince some friends to come visit

I have only bought one pair of shoes here in the last 2 and a bit years. They were from some random shop in the city. As for lotions, I've gotten stuff at the body shoppe here (although it's much more expensive) and I LOVE Lush. I haven't shopped there enough but my sister gave me some stuff from there for Christmas last year and I really love it. |

Went ahead and bought another pair today Was in the City and many stores are on sale/closing so shoes are 50% off. Good enough for me. Seriously, I have to get out of the Mosman bubble to remember what reasonable prices are. I'm still in sticker shock with clothes, but I'm starting to feel underdressed with my t-shirts and jeans around here....Merry Christmas all... |

Yeah, Mosman doesn't just cost you more with rent. Elsja said something about paying $4 for a lime a while ago. I bought a 5 kilo box of plums a week ago for.....$5. |

I tend to buy shoes back in the US - I have tried to find good shoes here, but I have funny feet to begin with so it's always tough. Of course, summer shoes and flip flops are easy. I have had some luck with Diana Ferrari shoes in oz - they are well made and when I was pregnant they were very comfortable. Lotions -hmmmmmmm. I have had some success at Costco here in Melbourne as they carry Aveeno products. Otherwise, it's been trial and error. No bb&bw ( I love their ginger/white tea and I am rationing the last of mine over here), but Aesop has some nice lotions, (they have counters at Myer and DJ's). I went back to the states in November and went to American Target and filled my cart with beauty products... it was such a great feeling to see all of the familiar things I miss here (like Carmex!) and I feel guilty for spending so much but sometimes you have to! |

Shoes in particular seem ridiculously expensive. I almost fainted when I bought my 6 yr old a pair of $125 sandals at Stomp but we needed them that day and didn't have time to drive somewhere else for a better deal. That's why I'm stocking up on school shoes while we are here in the US! |
