What were your favorite books, movies, tv shows, whatever, of the year? Books: The Southern Vampire Mysteries, Charlaine Harris. This is the Sookie Stackhouse series, and I absolutely LOVE them. Harris is a fantastic writer, and I love the characters in here (I just wish we saw more Pam on True Blood!). I'd also like to nominate Harris's Harper Connelly books - I'm really sad there are only three of them. Angela's Ashes. Yeah, yeah, I know I'm behind the times on this one. I love McCourt's writing, and his story is absolutely gut-wrenching. Me, Katharine Hepburn. She claims she's nothing like the women she's portrayed, but she is - tough-as-nails, funny, witty, and a unique voice. Movies: Star Trek. I'm a huge fan already (I'm a big Niner), and was waiting for this movie for 3 years. For once, The Geek's Prayer was answered! Moon. Sam Rockwell turns in a mind-blowing performance of an astronaut/miner living on the far side of the moon, with only a computer (brilliantly voiced by Kevin Spacey) for company. Things begin to... break down. Inglorious Basterds. I know plenty of people hate Tarantino, but this film was funny and brilliant. I especially liked the cinematography. Television: True Blood. As I mentioned before, I discovered the books and gobbled them up. I have a few quibbles with the show (as a Southerner, the "accents" make me want to cry), but overall it's the best television in years. |

Huz and I saw Moon not long ago, LOVED IT. I can't think of any favourites for 2009, it was SUCK A YEAR OF TOTAL SUCK FOR ME. OMFG. Ahem, anyway. . . True Blood definitely tops the list as well as Dexter in the tele department as being something I enjoyed. Books, I read sooo many. I did enjoy the True Blood books, but also books with darker themes like Khalid Abdalla's books, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. |

Khalid Hosseini? I absolutely loved Thousand Splendid Suns. Didn't read Kite Runner, though my mother did. |

Yup. Khalid Hosseini. I just realised that Rhe Kite Runner was out on DVD, and I didn't even realise that it was made into a MOVIE. So I was looking it up and wrote Khalid Abdalla instead of Hosseini. Abdalla plays one of the characters in The Kite Runner. LOL oops. You should read the book! It's really good. I had trouble putting them both down. |

I thought Modern Family was a great new sitcom for 2009. Classic American family "dysfunctinon". Hoping they will start airing it here soon. |

I became addicted to Glee on channel 10.... and Master Chef (I watched every single episode, I think... I had just had my daughter and it was always on the same time I was feeding her). One of my favorite books this year was " Fall on Your Knees" by Ann Marie Macdonald (about Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia). Also, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. |

"The 19th Wife" by David Ebershoff. Two parallel stories: the history of the Mormons, from the POV of Ann Eliza Young, one of Brigham Young's wives, who in reality really did leave him and caused a tremendous scandal. At the same time there is a young Mormon man trying to solve a modern-day murder mystery. The writing style in the modern part of the story was so wonderful, I read it twice over. |

I love the Southern Vampire Mysteries as well. I actually purchased the 7 book box set right before I moved out here last year and I read all of them and BF got two more of them for me for Christmas!! I also read Candy last year. It is a few years old. I saw the movie a while back (with Heath Ledger & Abby Cornish) and decided to get the book once I found out there was a book before the movie. I highly recommend these as well if you have not seen or read, but it does deal with drug use so its not for everyone. As for TV True Blood is one of the best shows out there. I can't wait till the new season starts. Dexter is great also! & I can't forget my favorite soap opera All My Children, I have not missed an episode in I don't remember when! ![]() As far as movies go I really enjoyed Avatar & Inglorious Bastards (gotta love a Tarantino movie!) |
