I thought I would list some of the American foods that we have found in Costco Australia in Melbourne. We have paid for our membership with Salsa alone. :-) Kirkland Signature Organic Salsa!!!! 1.87KG for ~$8.50 - This is very very good and cheaper per 100g than anything at Coles! Better than any Salsa that I have had a Mexican Restaurant in Oz. Kirkland Signature Tortilla Chips 1.13KG for ~$9 Kirkland Signature Maple Syrup in 1 Qt container ~$18 Skippy Peanut Butter large (don't remember the size) ~$6 Frozen Cream puffs - techinically not American but we bought them in the USA at Costco. Tootsie Rolls Tootsie Pops Waffle Fries Seemed Pretty expensive but were an organic one I think. Don't remember the brand but it starts with A Florida Natural Brand Fruit Nuggets Costco Bagels (but I think Glick's Bagels are better and cost the same) Costco Muffins - those very large Blueberry, Chocolate muffins Dried Blueberries Mrs. May's snacks (see them at Woolies too) |

Don't despair, they're opening one in Auburn soon. Last I saw it was just plans. But now, I've found this: http://costco.turborecruit.com.au/job/job_details.cfm?id=425596 It's amazing what you can tell about a company's plans from who it's hiring.

Hi! I'm from Long Beach, California and currently living in Melbourne I'm desperately trying to talk my husband into letting me get a Costco membership! We are a single income family and we're doing it tough at the moment so he's a little funny about spending $60 just for the privilege of walking into a store. "But it's Costco!" I keep telling him. Being an Aussie who's never been inside a Costco he just doesn't get it!Kellerville - Do you happen to recall any non-food American items from Melbourne's Costco? I read somewhere they have dryer sheets, man how I miss dryer sheets! A friend of mine here (she's a Yank too) just recently went home for a trip and she brought back a huge box of dryer sheets for me...I'm in heaven, but what will I do when they run out lol. Help me convince my dh to get the membership! Cheers! Steph |

I was there a couple of months ago and can confirm....they do have Bounce dryer sheets. There was a huge endcap of them and I kept having to explain to people what they were for....sooo funny. I could have stood there all day and convinced people to buy them! I felt that prices were really quite good...well worth the membership fee. I was able to get several big bags of Kirkland dried blueberries for about $14 EA, a couple of big bags of pistachios, tootsie rolls, a bestseller book (around $20). Heck, I joined to go just that one day and didn't feel cheated at all! We were lucky, in that an Aussie friend of ours had driven from Sydney to Melbourne and went with us so we loaded up his ute with goodies and he brought them back for us. |

Oh, it actually aches thinking about Costco here in my stage of homesickness. I tell myself this shall pass, this longing to step into a Costco. How shallow am I... Please don't answer.Everynight I use my plush Kirkland turkish cotton towels here and I profess my love for Costco as I dry myself off, while at the same time, I curse myself for not buying half a dozen of them before moving here. At least I packed these into our 6 suitcases. Somehow I knew these would serve as a salve to tie me over until our container arrives. I so want to rub my face right now into a towel that was dried with Bounce. okay, I'm done with my whining today.
This husband of yours needs to invest the $60 membership fee for your well-being. Kind of like a spa gift certificate. BTW, Steph, Long Beach/Seal Beach/Belmont Shores area was one of our old stopping grounds.....fond memories of that area. |

When my shipping container of goodies arrived here 6 months after I'd left Austin, the first thing I did was rip open a box of linens and take a good deep whiff of my sheets, dried with Bounce. Heaven. The last time I was in the States, before Costco had opened here, I went to the (real) Target and bought a huge container of it -- even though we don't own a dryer. (I keep hoping that one day I can convince DH it's necessary for towels at least, especially on damp days when it takes forever for the things to dry.)

Wow, thanks everyone Last time we visited home (August) I did a big load of laundry the day we left. My sis uses Snuggle Fabric softener in the wash and Bounce in the dryer...when I got home and unpacked I got SO VERY HOMESICk when I smelled that wonderful smell! I didn't want to wash any of my clothes! Don't know why I didn't think to at least steal a few dryer sheets from my sister to get me through the hard first few homesick weeks! And while we're on the subject, I miss normal sized dryers! I know they all hang their clothes to dry here but I don't! I hate that homes aren't even equipped with a dryer vent - sometimes it's like we live in the colonnial days or something. I hate that I can do a nice big load of laundry but then have to split it into two loads to dry. Grrrrr. Now......sheowahya - please tell me more about the one day guest pass. I emailed Costco a while back explaining that I was trying to convince dh to buy a membership and asked if there was a way we could go in once just so he could look around, and they said nope. Never mentioned a guest membership. Only that if we get a membership and dh isn't happy we can get a refund. Any idea how much the guest membership costs? |

Have you tried Dan Murphy's? There are several in Sydney. |

Thanks for the tip Natasha - have you heard of www.wineplace.com.au? If so, do you know how they compare to Dan Murphy's? Noticed wineplace's ad in smh and they deliver free if you buy 1/2 dozen or more bottles. Haven't tried them. I notice Dan Murphy's charges a $5 delivery fee. Have you had wine delivered to you? Do you have to be home to sign for it? Since we don't have a car, we've found Woolies is great for delivering the heavy stuff we don't want to lug back to our home with our little wheeled shopping bag. We ordered a 24 pack of Toohey's Extra Dry, along with a bunch of clunky jugs of cleaning supplies and insect barrier/killer and had it all delivered to our home. Quite convenient. You just have to be home during a time range for delivery. |

They also have Tide at Costco. The wine prices there weren't far off from Dan Murphy's (some brands might have even been cheaper at DM's). I noticed you seem to get the best deals on the canned/dry goods at Costco. I haven't gotten my membership yet - waiting for a car to make it more worthwhile. All we did was stop in while I was waiting for my goods to be sorted at the warehouse for import and I just told the lady at the door we wanted to check it out. She had us sign in on a little clipboard and told us we just wouldn't be able to puprchase anything that day. Which was fine, because we just wanted a look. |

Besides the Tide I also saw Downey, Gain, Bounce, and Dreft there too. This was just after it opened and I don't know if they still carry all of these products. If any were a poor seller I would imagine that they would be quickly discontinued. I too was explaining how we use Bounce to the Aussies who were looking at it and wondering what it is for. Personally I almost never use my dryer (found for free at the curb) as it makes my place all steamy and linty. It does not have an exhaust hose connection and just vents through the door into the room. The windows need to be open when it is used and this was quite chilly during winter. At 16 + cents per KWH for electricity it is also quite expensive to use it too. I might be more inclined to use it if I had a place outside such as a porch to put it. I line dry outside when I can and if it is damp, cold, or raining I hang my cloths indoors and let my dehumidifier dry them. Before I bought the dehumidifier I sometimes had trouble with dampness, condensation, and even some mold growing on the wall during the winter. |
