Where can I find Flaxseed?

I would like to cook with flaxseed again as I have picky kids and I sneak it into their meals. I went into one health food store and they said it was called something else here, but I cannot remember the name. It looked like more of a seed though than ground flaxseed and otherwise they recommended the oil, so I did not trust either. Anyone know where I can find "normal" ground up flaxseed (like the ones from Trader Joes or normal grocery stores)?

I've ordered organic flaxseed products from Waltanna Farms in Hamilton, VIC.
They have "rolled flaxseed" which is probably what you saw, only the hulls removed, and ALSO have flaxseed meal and flaxseed flour, the meal is probably what you want. ;)

Stoney Creek (VIC) has it, as well.

I haven't heard it called anything else.
Good luck! It definitely exists, here!

I'd try one of those all-natural granola-people stores that smells of patchouli.

What, you don't have hippie stores in Perth? I can throw a rock here on King Street and hit two.

Flaxseed is often called linseed here. You may be able to buy the whole seeds here and grind them yourself.

When I worked for Wild Oats in Miami a customer once tried to grind flaxseeds in the self service coffee grinders. After the regular coffee grinder got gummed up they then proceeded to gum up the decaf coffee grinder too making both useless. We had to call the coffee grinder service person to come to take the machines apart to clean them. Another time a customer tried to grind peanuts in the coffee grinder with the same result even though there was a perefectly working peanut butter machine nearby....

Thanks. Yes, it's definitely flaxseed meal I am looking for then. Basically, I need it to be invisible once I mix it into foods LOL. I think you're right with the linseed name. I'll keep a lookout for either...ta!

You forgot the "old" in front of hippie.

It was your stereotypical description,

that I found offensive.

Well, sorry for trying to make a joke.

But with ingredients like that (I'd like to find arrowroot to use as a thickener, rather than corn starch) I would look for an all-natural store.

I buy arrowroot powder at my local IGA store, in the Asian food section (it's imported from Thailand).

eta: My husband says he's seen it in the regular baking section at Coles, near the baking powder, etc, says it's in a yellow&white cylinder container.

I buy flaxseed oil and take the tablets. Unless you're planing to use a lot at a time, I think that flaxseed has an extremely quick shelf-life and it loses anti-inflammatory properties quickly if kept in the natural form (not cold pressed). Look it up on google for more. Anyway, I see it everywhere.

We get our linseed meal from HealthyLife. There is a HealthyLife in CBD Sydney and there is another in Bondi Junction (a franchise) that I know of. We've been putting a spoon of flaxseed meal in our morning cereal or oatmeal for years. Great stuff. With all the mosquities here, we've recently also added a small spoon of brewer's yeast to our cereal as well. Stronger tasting so must use sparingly.
