FBI processing timeline?

The FBI received our request for the background check on November 18 but we've heard nothing since (7 weeks have elapsed). We're in the U.S. so it went off to the Virginia office. Has anyone else submitted to the FBI in the latter part of 2009 and had a reply? I'd love to hear about a couple of comparative timelines so we can figure out when to start panicking.
Thanks,
Jules

Hey, I sent mine on October 10 and got it back on October 30. I sent it with a letter stating that I needed it for a visa and to get it done ASAP! I don't want to make you panic, but maybe there is a problem with your finger prints, I had problems with the prints for my state request...if so, you will have to start all over. I suggest that you get some more prints done and send off another request. You'll only be out $18 plus postage, but at least you will have a back up if there is a problem. Be sure to write them a letter to expedite your request...it seemed to work for me. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi Jules,

Check this recent post; it sounds like they've had a massive influx of requests lately. :( BTW, you can check the status of your FBI record request by calling +1 (304) 625-5590. HTH!

We have spoken to the FBI, there's no problem with our submission it's just that all background checks are taking a minimum of 10 weeks to process. We did include an expedite request but that apparently means absolutely nothing these days. Our 10 weeks will be up Jan 27 - we'll start panicking the week or so after that.

We sent ours on Dec 19 because stupidly we didnt get a return receipt so dont know if they even got them. I called today and she said they would take a minimum of 10 weeks, aarghh

When I checked in Nov they were taking about a month, so I didnt send as we were not quite ready to apply.

Oh well, I should be used to waiting, after USCIS
N400 approved Sep 2009.
Australian Spouse Visa 309/100 applied for 21 Dec 2009
Medical criteria not met, so waiver application sent
Medical Waived and 100 visa approved 12 July 2010

I had sent my prints in early December and I have no received any word yet. I even put a "due" date on the outside of the envelope but that date has come and gone. I wasn't expecting it to take as long as it has because I sent some prints in last year at this time and they took about 2.5 weeks.

And of course I didn't get a receipt or anything. I'll give it another month...

Mine was sent in Nov last year, the FBI received it on NOv 11th, and they had sent out the letter exactly on Jan 11th, so just FYI only...

I sent mine around December 17 as well so I guess it's the race to see if they all come around the same time now!

Today is Feb 4th, 2010 and we still haven't received the FBI background check - originally submitted to them Nov 18, 2009. Last week they told us it was in final processing and we'd receive it any day now - fingers crossed it's in the mail when I get home. This 11 week (so far) wait has been excruciating. :$

Congratulations! I'm about to send off for mine....kinda hoping it doesn't take that long! But red tape is red tape, unfortunately. Hehe.

I requested mine 11/25; they received it 11/27 and I requested it to be expedited so I expected it in December. But I just received it today 2/11 (after a snafu with my payment that delayed it an additional week). As noted above they are having a high volume...I think they need some stimulus money for jobs at the FBI!

I requested mine in December and put a deadline on it. I didn't have a receipt of delivery because USPS didn't place a tracker number on it (even though I paid for it!). I haven't heard anything yet. And with the recent discussion about FBI checks on this website, I decided to finally track it down. I emailed them a few days ago (2 months after I sent the prints in) and this is what I got: It is not showing in our logs as of today.

So should I be concerned? I called them and expressed my concerns regarding sending the prints 2 months ago, having a deadline that has come and gone, and the prints haven't even been logged yet... And I was told by the representative: If I were you, I would not be concerned it takes awhile before we can pull the status with the 10 week processing time. And we no longer honor expedited requests due to current volume.

I'm still a little baffled. My assumption is that prints would be "logged" as they arrive. I don’t even know if they have the prints! I'm not sure if I should get more prints done and start this process over again. Or maybe I'm worrying about nothing. Uggh, what a pain in the ...

Just wanted to let everyone know that the FBI no longer looks at deadlines posted on the outside envelope or cover letter. I don't know if this is temporary due to high volume or permanent.

If anyone needs to contact the FBI regarding background checks you can call:

1-304-625-5590

Or by email

liaison@leo.gov

Oddly enough they are very prompt when responding to emails (<1 day)!

Since they're telling you not to stress, I wouldn't stress. They probably don't do anything with it until they're ready to process it, in which case they don't have a record yet because it's still in the queue.

One thing you might do is go to the post office and ask where your parcel is and if it's delivered. Depending on how you sent it they'll at least have to track it down for you, tracking number or not. Could take a while, but at least when they get back to you, you can know for sure it didn't get lost in the post.

Meg - I had the same experience - I think they didn't have it logged until week 8 or 9...and then it showed up. It was only on the last day of week 10 did they tell me I needed to send a different payment (since I had sent a check, but since it wasn't expedited now needed a credit card). I was very disappointed to hear that since I had called 2x a week for 3-4 weeks to check on it. But, if yours is like mine...they have it, but just haven't logged it yet. Keep calling though - once I hit that snafu, she told me she would try to help if she could (after I requested to speak to a supervisor and explained how much this was impacting my life) it would be 2-3 weeks, but I got it 1 week later.

thanks, actually I feel a lot better after reading this thread and knowing that many others have been waiting what seems like forever for their prints!

glad to hear your visa was approved once you got your prints! When will you be making the move?
