I heard that there is some kind of tax on new items that are brought in to Australia. Do you all know how strictly this is enforced? We have an air shipment that will include some items that are new in the box-sporting goods/electronics. Not sure if we should keep them in their original boxes?

If your shipment is flagged by customs, is inspected, and items are found that you cannot prove were purchased more than 12 months prior to shipment, you'll be liable for import duty (I think around 10% of the value of the item) plus GST (also 10%). (I may be wrong on the percentages but the upshot is it's not cheap.) The safest thing would be to remove all items from their packaging, but even that won't keep you completely in the clear. Besides, with computers and other electronics, the safest way to ship is in their original packaging, in which case you may need to have access to the original receipts to prove they ARE more than 1 year old. |

Wouldn't hurt to bang the boxes up a bit.

We brought over quiet a few things that were totally brand new, like a mover in the box and all sorts of other things, we got flagged for inspection because they could not find that mower, so they went through everything and say all the new stuff. We were not charged anything, maybe we lucked out. (or didn't because all the other cleaning or disposing fees LOL) |

I believe the threshhold is if you keep it under $1000. you will not be charged duty & GST. |
