the selection on the Chinese menus around here is so small compared to places back home. So far I have not found a place a that makes sesame chicken or general tso's chicken, which are my favorite! has anyone seen these listed on a menu anywhere? I have tried the honey chicken and it was totally bland! It amazes me how different the menus are here compared to the US! |

I think that might be a regional thing (being in Darwin ).I find the Chinese menus over here MUCH more extensive and interesting than what I was accustomed to in the US, and the food prepared fresher and in general, FANTASTIC! Lisa eta: and there's argument whether General Tso's Chicken is actually a Chinese dish, which is why you often don't find it, here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Tso's_chicken Edited by shylady, Jan 24 2010, 01:15:15 PM.

TBH, I can't remember the last time we went out for Chinese, but I'm pretty sure I've had sesame chicken somewhere up here. Not sure about General Tso's Chicken. Which restaurants have you tried? Happy Garden (the one in Parap) and Dragon Court at the casino are supposed to be really good. |

The General's chicken, American Chinese food. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Tso%27s_chicken). General Tso's chicken (sometimes General Tao's chicken, General Tsao's chicken, or General Gau's Chicken) is a sweet-and-spicy, deep-fried chicken dish that is popularly served in American and Canadian Chinese restaurants. The origins of the dish are unclear. The dish was previously largely unknown in China and other lands home to the Chinese diaspora.[1] Thus, General Tso's chicken is most likely an American invention in the history of American Chinese cuisine. I was a bit surprised as well when I first ordered Chinese here, but try sweet and sour chicken maybe? I can't remember seeing sesame chicken either. Either way, there is some YUMMY Chinese food here. My favourite is rock salt & pepper calamari! /drools. Also, Vietnamese food is to die for. And Thai. /sigh. Actually, I haven't met a food here I haven't liked. Turkish! Indian! Anyone tried Etheopian? Edited by Bindie, Jan 24 2010, 07:46:09 PM.

I have tried Happy Garden, Panda (yuck!) and Asian Gateway, which was more thai than chinese. Happy garden does make a dish that i like spicy pork, but i'm not to into spicy foods so i ask them to make it mild which sometimes they do and other times its hot! Well I am very sad to learn General Tso's is an american thing! Who would have thought! |

Melbourne and Sydney both have great Chinatowns with many different restaurants and Chinese bakeries to choose from. Often the menus are quite extensive. Sydney in particular has several spectacular Chinese food courts in its Chinatown. I remember one food court that I ate in is named "Eating world". |

Oddly enough, overall Darwin's restaurants are excellent...especially when considering the size of the city. The chinese community played a significant part in establishing Darwin and there still many of the original families there, so it's surprising that there isn't a plethera of great chinese restaurants too! Happy Garden is still there? Wow! They were always considered to be great value for money. There used to be a restaurant (in Parap?) that was highly recommended and I think they used to serve yum cha....but that may have closed down?!?! I can't remember.... |

Yeah, I've often wondered if maybe I just haven't discovered the great Chinese restaurants hiding around Darwin. There was a lot of talk about creating a Chinatown in the city, but that whole project seems to have been discarded completely. Still, there's been a lot of growth particularly in the last few years, so I'm sure there's something! Parap's got the formal sit-down version of Happy Garden, and a brand-new Indian restaurant that has the absolute hokey-est TV ads! ![]() Then there's the AYCE buffet Happy Garden in Nightcliff (next to the Beachfront Hotel) and the food court version in Cas. Oh, just asked K (who used to work in the CBD)... he says there's a few good Chinese eateries in the Smith St. Mall. There's a yum cha place on Cavenagh St. that seems to be very popular. Now that you mention it, we once tried yum cha at a new place in the Smith St Mall (it was located right next to Monty's), and it was OK. Mitchell St has really become a centre for culture and restaurants, lots of good stuff on the strip there. |

I ran into the same problem so I've started making sesame chicken at home.... it's basically chicken stock, corn flour, soy sauce and sugar....look online at copycat recipes from your favorite USA restaurants....Fetuccini Alfredo (Olive Garden Style) is spot on!!.....so is TGIF Jack Daniels Chicken.... I also miss "chicken on a stick" and that red boneless pork.....Mmmmm I've also noticed the chinese food is slightly different as well...more curry on the menu but it's just trial and error in finding something that suits your tastes. (Thats part of the fun) I've found an amazing chinese place in Adelaide that made me forget all about the one I grew up with. Also, Central Market in Adelaide has AMAZING asian foods!!
