Hi everyone, ...so at year's beginning I got into the habit of having a smoothie for breakfast everyday. I've been back in the US now for two months absolutely loving, and not taking for granted how seemingly larger, varied and less expensive food is here when compared to Australia. I mean a big bag of frozen blueberries is around 2.50 at Walmart...how sweet is that? Just tellin it like it is But I am coming back to start school again in a couple of weeks and am actually pretty afraid that my food consumption (and hence my health) will be affected because of cost/scarcity. I know it probably sounds silly to ask this question when of course I spent most of last year living in Adelaide but does anyone know where I can get my frozen fruits? I honestly don't know because I wasn't looking last year. Also where might I find fresh kale? I can't remember seeing it, but then again, I wasn't looking

You won't find the JUMBO bags of frozen berries here like you can in the States. I've found them in Costco, but that's too far for you to travel, and no Costco in SA yet. The biggest I've been able to find is 750gm in the regular grocery stores, Woolies, Coles, IGA, etc. As for kale, I haven't found it yet, not even at the Victoria Market... but that place is HUGE and I've barely seen 1/3 of it!!! and things change every day, so you never see all of it. Cheers, Marilyn |

If you've got Aldi I remember seeing them there and thinking they were cheaper than the grocery store. Don't remember what size or how much. One thing I've taken to doing here is checking with the fruit stands/markets and they will sometimes do deals for their really ripe fruit/veg (which would be fine for freezing and using for smoothies - I used to do it when I was doing the Zone). It just makes them sweet without adding sugar. The ripe tomatoes re fine for sauces and stuff. |

I'm addicted to mango/soy smoothies at the moment. So I just go to the markets and get a tray of mangos (Between $8 and $12 for 12 mangos). Then when I get home I peel them all, cut them up and put them in ziplocks into the freezer. When I want one I take out the bag, chop it up into bits the blender can deal with, add soy milk, blend away. Now, granted, at Trader Joe's in the states they have frozen mango chunks that are already frozen individually, and you just chuck 'em in. This takes more work, but at least it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. |

I do buy frozen fruit at Woolies ... but there is also a fruit / veg place near me that has BIG bags of frozen berries (including cranberries) and mangoes for cheaper. So, check the bigger greengrocers around you. |

I have no advice on bulk frozen fruit ... but I'm glad to see you'll be back soon.

Thanks everyone for the advice It's been a bit rough adjusting to the idea, but I'll be back in Australia as of Monday and in Adelaide on Wednesday...so it's going to be kind of fun to troll the markets again
