Not sure if this is the right place. But we own 1/2 of my late FILs car, its in my SILs name and her insurance, when we go back in July I want to drive it, anyone know what I need to do to be covered on it? |

Have your SIL check on her car insurance. Mine in the US covered anyone I gave permission to drive my car, so it wasn't a problem with Greg driving it when he came to visit. When I was back in the US last year my sister loaned me her car, and her insurance covered me the same way. Might be different in CA, though, so just have her ask the insurance agent. Lisa |

I think you can just simply have your SIL add your name as an authorised driver to the policy. |

I was thinking that when our Aussie friends came over there we let them drive our car and it was fine. But since I'm not Aussie and American, I could be considered an "unisured motorist"? ANyway, I'll have her call thats a good idea. I'm hoping they sell it before then and I can rent a convertible for a month to play in! |

I drive my parents cars when I'm home and they have a policy which allows their insurance to cover drivers who aren't on the policy. It's through AAA California. |

In CA basically every auto policy from a standard carrier "follows the car", that is, it will cover anyone authorised to use the vehicle for liability / UMBI (and comp and coll). The only time that it would be a problem is if you became a member of the household where the car is registered or garaged. Then the insurance company will want you added to the policy since you might become a regular user of the vehicle. As a visitor or guest you should have no problem using someone else's vehicle on a temporary basis. However, you should have vehicle owner call the agent / broker just to verify. Some non standard (offshore) policies are more restrictive so definitely check.

Thanks everyone, we are covered. I think I am going to buy a car anyway so when we travel back home we have it for us. We had one here for years for when we traveled here and it saved heaps on renting one. Plus my FIL has this huge Caddy LOL |
