So we decided we'd like to try and do Christmas in July this year. All the pictures of snow back home in NY has made us want our kids to have some snowball fun (oddly enough we said right before we moved here how cool it will be to spend Christmas on the beach while others are freezing their butts off; ahhh the grass is always greener). Can anyone recommend a ski resort/ski area that's relatively close to get to and where we can maybe even get in some ski time pending ski school for the kids? We'd probably lean towards a long weekend timeframe. Is the Canberra area really the closest? Thanks. |

Welllll... it doesn't snow in Canberra much. I mean, sure the ground gets dusted now and then, but mostly it's just cold. COLD! I would look the Thredbo area, it's a nice place to go. You'll have to fly into Canberra and then drive there. It's about 2.5 hours from Canberra. Have a look at this link: http://www.thredbo.com.au/ Good luck! |

You can drive to the NSW Snowys from Sydney in a comfortable 6 hours. It's the closest place you'll be able to go for snow and skiing. Best to book now, as the village books up quickly. We were there in late September last year, and there was still some snow. However, the best time to go is July and August. Note: if you are driving to the snow, you will have to have chains on your tires. They are required during the winter months. But you can rent them in lots of places near there. Here is a good site with a bunch of info: http://www.snowholidays.com.au/ |

AHHH how wonderful it is to live a comfortable 2 hour drive to both the beach and the snow!! I'd recommend Mt BawBaw or Omeo, but this region is probably way too far for a holiday break. Cheers, Marilyn |

Thanks! I'll look into it more, but it's starting to sound more and more expensive for a novelty weekend getaway. We'll have to see. |

We had a fun snowy weekend at Mt Buller this past July. But a lot of people say it is [sometimes] cheaper to fly to New Zealand and get bigger mtns / better snow. I dunno, I thought Mt Buller was pretty good! If I were to do it again I would probably get a place on the mountain (we were down near Mansfield - cute town ... but quite a drive to get up to the resort). There must be something closer to you ... google is your friend ;-) |
