UGGS - really?

As the weather gets cooler, I totally assumed I would continue the "US uniform" of Jeans, North Face jacket and Ugg boots. I'm hearing from Aussie mums here though that Uggs are actually frowned upon and considered "Ugly slipper shoes only to be worn in the house"! I was in shock. For what seems to be a staple product and so admired in the US, to hear they're junk here is amazing. Has anyone heard this as well? Now I have the Cardy (Crochet) ones - are those considered faux pas well?

Then I'm hearing what is "in" are Gumboots - seriously? Aren't those like the rain galoshes? What is going on?

Well, I live out in farm country, and gumboots are WAY more popular than UGGly boots.

In fact, a local store had them on sale a while back and I commented at morning tea that I was going to get myself a pair. I was very quickly told NOT to wear them in public as it would "RUIN my reputation"

ok... I'm new in town, I'll take all the advice I can get!!

I'm going into my third winter here, and I have yet to SEE anyone wear them... back in the States, they were EVERYWHERE... even in FLORIDA!!!!

go figure

Yah same here. I only see people wearing them around the house or to dash outside to hang the clothes on the line. No one wears them out and in public... but I haven't seen any gumboots either. That being said, I could care less about what's fashionable.

This made me laugh: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/05/01/1051382048858.html "Inside it's an ugg boot; outside it's an 'ugh' boot."

I wouldn't take their fashion opinions too seriously. I've noticed many Aussie women have an interesting sense of style with their prom dresses and MC Hammer balloon pants. I too have my US uniform of Jeans and North Face jacket at the ready but could never bring myself to buy Uggs. I prefer Danskos with my jeans.

I work in Mosman and I have seen lots of people wearing UGGs. That being said, they have all been teenaged girls who are wearing them with short shorts, a tank top, and a big ass scarf around their necks. So - maybe that is the only acceptable way to wear them?? LOL

Seriously, take Australian fashion advice with a grain of salt. There are some freaky scary things that seem to be perfectly acceptable here. I think, if you are comfortable with how you look, you will be fine. Uggs aren't that attractive, sure. But they are warm and comfy... so I say, wear them if you want to!

I saw plenty of Minnesotans wearing Uggs when we lived there a couple of years ago (even in Summer)....they seemed to be really "in" there. I personally don't like them (although I can see how useful they are for keeping your feet warm).....but then again I don't follow trends I just wear what I want to!

The first time I was living in Melbourne back in 2004 I wore jeans, nicer looking top, cute scarf and uggs to Crown Casino cause the boys I lived with wanted to gamble. Didn't think anything of it since that was a typical casual outfit for going out in California...was only in Crown Casino for about 15 minutes before security came up to me and said I would need to leave the building because I was in "inappropriate" attire...they ended up letting me stay because they realized I was from out of town, but they gave me the strict warning that Ugg boots are not to be worn outside the house in Australia!

OMG that is too funny!

I love my ugg boots - I used to wear them everywhere in Washington - it was one of the few ways to have warm feet in winter time.
I only wear 100% Australian ugg however not those crappy Americanized Dexter versions of Ugg.

I wouldn't give 2 beans of thought toward what anyone thought of my wardrobe.... the things that Australians wear out in public are far worse then a pair of ugg boots...

Someone came to church today in a see through purple spaghetti top shirt complete with black bra and rhinestone studded spandex pants with stilletto heels! I wonder what she wears to the club? LOL Of course no one blinked an eye... except the American who had to pick her chin up from the floor.

LOL...Visit Tasmania. You see people wearing Ugg boots everywhere. I don't have a pair of ugg boots that I wear out (just a low not so amazing pair) but I will be honest...I've been thinking of buying a pair of Tall black Uggs to wear with my skinny jeans for a more casual look compared to me wearing my tall leather boots.

With all that said I don't think I will ever get used to seeing the girls here wearing track pants with Ugg boots tucked in. OMG...Like how do they even leave the house like that? I think there is a difference in the styles of ugg boots available. You can go in a store here and see tons of them in the slipper section that look like they could be worn out but clearly they are slippers. Then you can actually find rather nice looking Uggs that are made for outdoor wear.

I used to be more vain when I was in America. I only wore brand names, etc. and I never owned a pair of Uggs. Here, I actually enjoy wearing my Ugg boots around the house and I have even stooped to being happy without the most expensive "Brand Name" Jeans on my booty like Tommy Hilfiger.

I guess things are probably a bit more relaxed here in Tassie than over on the mainland. I'll take the laid back relaxed life any day but I can guarantee you won't find me wearing the "Slipper Style" Ugg boots with my snazzy track pants tucked in...haha!

I know. I'm realizing how flamboyant some of these Aussies dress. To each is own I guess. I'm not too concerned because if the weather continues the way it is, I'll just continue wearing flip flops in the dead of winter.

That's freaking hilarious! Crown Casino security dispensing fashion advice. I have seen many people wearing them outdoors, so that's a lot of bs.

Anything is better than the teenage girls in the US who wear them in summer with a micro-mini.

Burswood Casino security over here in Perth (also the Packer-Empire) is just as ambiguous on dress code. Supposedly before 8:00PM it's casual... after 8:00 jeans aren't allowed. Unless you're an Asian high-roller, they can wear ANYTHING. I've seen a lady get turned away for wearing backless sandals during the day... huh? :headscratch: Half the senior citizens that get there on the bus wear crocs or sandals without backs!
Also watched a guy with Ruggers shorts get denied admittance, when I was wearing the exact same ones and walked in. :rollin:

I was going to say something similar, hah. I know I never feel embarrassed about wearing Crocs around, considering that I know multiple people who'll just go to the store barefoot and not even realize it. (I wear the Crocs ballet flats though, I still have some pride.) There's definitely going to be Uggs worn in public all winter.

Tall black Uggs with skinny jeans don't sound so bad, actually!

OMG don't even get me started on the Barefoot thing! I still can't believe my eyes when I see people walk in to a food place without shoes. Even the grocery is bad! Wake up Tasmanian's...LOL....it only takes a sec to at least put on some thongs. I would rather see them in slippers than nothing at all..haha. I'll stop there cause ya....It seriously Disgusts me and my poor husband has to hear me fuss every time I see someone...heehee. Thank God my husband wasn't raised to go barefoot in public places.

Barefoot isn't just a Tassie thing... its a real thing here in Queensland too... I see the little ones running around shopping centers in their barefeet and I always worry about them stepping on glass or something... I haven't yet seen someone come to church in their barefeet but it wouldn't surprise me if it happened.
