hello! my husband and i are looking to move to caloundra from brisbane. hes fortunate enough to live in the middle, so he doesnt need to find a new job. but i do. i've landed one interview but didnt get the job. i've registered with 2 job agencies and both have replied with they have no jobs meeting my skills. plus, we dont have a place to live up there yet. im needing to find a job so that we CAN move. if that makes any sense. i need some help, if someone has been successful in finding a job prior to even moving to the new destination. so any tips would be SO appreciated. thanks so much :)

I don't know if my circumstances would apply to your situation, but here goes...

I landed in Melbourne in April 2008 and was, for all intents and purposes "homeless" as I did not have a permanent address in Victoria. I traveled around for 6 weeks before I landed my dream job. How did I do it? I registered with every employment agency in each area I was willing to live in. I spent hours every day searching the various job websites and when I was in an area I wanted to settle in, I got the local newspaper every day.

Six weeks isn't all that long, especially considering it was my FIRST six weeks in the country!! The secret is to work at it, lots of work, every single day. Don't take "we don't have any jobs for your skills" as an answer. Keep calling them, tell them you're serious and are willing to make a commitment to a company... all you need is a fair go.

Best of luck,
Marilyn

Marilyn's right. LOTS of time and effort. If the agencies are't being helpful, try finding companies that would hire your skills set and contact them directly. Put a CV together with a cover letter, have somebody proof-read it and start sending! Make sure you call and get the name of the person you should be addressing it to, as well. It shows you're willing to put in a little more effort than the standard 'sir/madam'. I found that when I did that and the recruiters knew I was doing it, they moved a lot faster. I don't know if it was because they figured I was serious or that they figured they might lose the commission, but it worked!

You hit the nail on the head!!

They didn't want to lose out on earning a dollar.
