Hiya guys, Very simple question, what brand name/ general name of eggs can I buy that has the bleached white shell that most of us grew up with? I don't mind the brown ones at all but these are to be dyed for Easter. Elementary question I know, but it's not like I can politely go opening egg cartons at the supermarket ![]() Cheers, Samantha Edited by Samantha, Apr 6 2010, 08:27:39 PM.

Samantha, it's not rude to open egg cartons; it's just savvy shopping. Don't stress over it. As for the colour of the shells for Easter -- can't help you finding white shells, but from personal experience the brown eggs take vinegar dyes quite well. My grandmother had chickens so brown eggs are the only thing we knew of, and they came out quite nicely. Maybe the yellows were a bit orange, but otherwise it was all good. Happy bock bock!

Definitely open the cartons to check for cracked eggs! There is a range in the brown tones, so maybe try for some lighter ones. |

Great question Samantha- I plan on dying eggs but hadn't even thought about not being able to get white ones! I think Megan had the best idea- just look for light ones. Also, my mom bought me two egg dying kits but she hasn't even put them in the mail yet, so odds are they won't get here for Easter. Is there anything else I can substitute? I want to show my non-American boyfriend our Easter traditions! |

Ahhhh well as long as the lighter brown eggs will take to colour with vinegar it's all good. I should clarify I do check eggs before I buy them by looking for leakage through the carton and sometimes open the carton. As you might imagine I was talking about a situation where I'd be literally looking through every brand in the isle. Anyway to answer your question Crapola, yep you can use food colouring...or at least the American stuff. I still have my gnarly neon food colouring that I used for those beautiful neon pink and green spider cakes at my Haloween party and cannot wait to see what sort of colours I'll get this time.

Strange but I had to google this because I can remember barely when I was 5 we lived in Hillsboro, Oregon before Intel took it over. We had brown eggs because we had chickens living in the backyard. However we had no white chickens from my recollection. I totally forgot about white eggs however I was freaked out that the eggs here were not in a refrigerator like they are in America. I googled and here is what I found on: http://www.chacha.com/question/do-they-bleach-chicken-eggs-to-be-white Q: Do they bleach chicken eggs to be white Ads by Google Hobby Farms Pictures of a model hobby farm eggs and chooks for sale sites.google.com/site/daspringallfa Backyard Chicken Coops Australia's No.1 Coop specialists Free Freight Australia Wide www.planetpoultry.com A: White eggs come from white chickens and brown eggs come from brown-ish chickens. Haha, that's hilarious! It sounds like the kind of a answer a parent would give a kid when they really didn't have a clue what the answer was! Thanks for the suggestions guys- so just put a drop of food coloring in some vinegar? Edited by natasha_alena, Mar 11 2010, 08:51:59 PM.

I dyed brown eggs last year and the colors were beautiful - deeper and richer than white eggs. I used vinegar and drops of food color you buy on the cake decorating aisle. I can't remember the exact mix, I think it was one or two tablespoons of vinegar for every cup of warm water and about ten drops of color. I remember sitting on the floor at Woolies surrounded by cartons of eggs picking and choosing the lightest ones possible. The things we do for our kids..... I tried to insert a photo of the finished product here but couldn't figure out how, but here is a link to the photo. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PsiaOw-eQcU/SehrRWQAypI/AAAAAAAAAK4/8iDpYWYqZtU/s1600-h/P1000241.JPG Edited by anater, Mar 11 2010, 09:43:31 PM.

I have not seen white chicken eggs in Melbourne but I have seen white duck eggs for sale at various markets such as Queen Vic. Market and Prahran Market. The Central Market in Adelaide would be a good place to look fo them. I too always open the carton and check each egg before buying them and I quite often find broken or cracked eggs when I do this. |

The eggs were brown, but I did hand pick the lightest ones I could find. Jasper - when did you live in Ventura? I grew up there; moved after I graduated from Buena HS in the 80's |

Just to confuse you further, there are white chickens that lay brown eggs, and black chickens that lay white eggs or brown eggs, and my Araucana chickens were white and laid blue eggs. THOSE were fun to dye!
