Hello!!

I am getting ready to submit my application for a partner visa next month and I'm stuck! I am requesting friends and family in America to write a letters regarding our relationship and have no idea what guidelines to give them as far as what tell them to say. Any suggestions?

I'm probably completely wrong about this so please other respondents correct me- but I am not sure you can use U.S. family and friends to do the Stat Declarations or maybe you can, just not for all of them? Or maybe I'm completely wrong and you can use U.S. people for both/all of them. We got three of our friends from Aus to write me notes, but obviously if you haven't lived here, you probably don't have any Aussie friends yet! :)

Anyway, our friends wrote that they knew Steve and I were in a loving and long term relationship because they saw us out and about in a social context quite often and that we acted like a couple and that I had become an important part of our friend group and that they had been to our house and knew we were living together. They each only wrote 2-3 really short paragraphs and that seemed to do the trick.

Hope this helps.

Actually, I'm not 100% positive but it sounds like you're getting statutory declarations mixed up with supporting documentation (i.e. letters).

Statutory declarations are exactly what Little D said. It's been a while, but I think you need Aussie people for those.

As for supporting documentation such as letters, cards, etc., those are things that are sent to you and your partner. For instance, invitations to weddings or birthday parties that have your name along with your partner's name on it. Or letters/e-mails from friends or family members that mention you and your partner in them.

They can write supporting statements, but you still need two (or more....I had 9!) Australian Citizens to do Form 888s. They'll want to essentially write an affidavit according to local law where they live and have it notarised.

I'd have them answer the same questions that are on the Form 888, but in more of a paragraph form:

- For how many years have you known the applicant’s partner?
- State how you know the applicant and the applicant’s sponsor, and indicate how often you have been in contact with them
- State whether you believe the relationship of the applicant and his/her partner to be genuine and continuing, and give your reasons for your belief
- State any other matters you wish to add

These would really just be supplementary. I'd put them right behind the Form 888s when you assemble your application.

Hey all!

I handed in 11 statutory declarations in all, 6 from Australians and 5 from Americans. They both used Form 888 and made a copy of their passport page then got it notarized, in Australia or here in NY. Case officer D.L. didn't seem to mind (as he granted my offshore partner in 21 days, along with the other stuff of course!!:)

I think more the better! Hope everyone is well and will be arriving in Melbourne September 7, just in time to jump from summer in the Hamptons :p to spring in Melbs!:)

Thanks a bunch for all the suggestions. :woohoo:
I do have 5 Aussies willing to to stat decs for us here. I just wanted some extra supporting stuff to submit from people that have known me for years and actually met my boyfriend when he was in the States. When I spoke to immigration a few days ago the guy said the letters from the States didn't need to be notarized...here's hoping he knew what he was talking about! I did send another email with all your suggestions for what they should write in the letter.

Thanks again!! You guys rock!!!
