How do you actually apply? Onshore defacto

Hi, just a question separate from my ongoing visa thread. How do you actually lodge your application? As in, do we need to make an appointment (I'm in Melbourne) or do you send it in? Or just drop in (ha ha)? Also, if the only thing we're waiting for is my FBI check results, does it make sense to get the ball rolling and apply and give the FBI results in as soon as they get here (probably about another 5 weeks)? I would love to have everything underway as soon as possible, in the vague hope that I'll have a new visa come September (pretty short timeframe to hope for, I know). Thanks!

I went to my local office on the Gold Coast and turned it in and yes it was a drop in sort of thing... well sorta drop in... you got a number and had to wait. But it was so worth it - they looked over our application and gave us heaps of good advice. I'm so glad I didn't put it in the mail - it would have added weeks to our application process.

Hi Jess,

My partner has a friend that he works with that is here on the Defacto Partner Visa and she advised to call the immigration office where you plan on applying and making an appointment to bring in your application. She called, got an appointment two weeks later & was granted the visa right then and there at the time of application at her appointment. I am hoping things go that smoothly with mine as well. Like you I am hoping to have mine by September. I just sent my FBI check request in last week though! Once I get that (hopefully in August) we plan on applying.

Hi.

You need to call the immi number and make an appointment at your nearest immi office. And I believe once you make that appointment, they send out a checklist of everything you need to bring in with you to your appointment. I have a friend who came on a tourist visa (after spending a year here on a WHV) to apply for the defacto visa. She followed everything on her checklist, and she would have been approved ON THE SPOT had she had her AFP clearance. Once she sent that in, it was granted a week later.

I submitted my onshore spouse visa a few days ago and I was assigned a CO and had something like a really casual interview with her. While she was typing information into her computer I was eavesdropping on some of the interviews going on around me. :nono:

There was a couple in tears because the CO was essentially denying their defacto visa because they could not give a clear answer as to when they decided to remain in a committed relationship with each other (I don't know the exact phrase from the application). It was quite sad because I think if I were applying for a defacto visa, I wouldn't know the exact date when we chose to commit ourselves to each other... :headscratch:

It sounds like you are really organized and you should have no problems. Just make sure you know the date you decided to remain as a defacto couple!

Yeah, you just have to choose one that you can prove conclusively. I chose when we moved in to our first place that had both of our names on the lease.

At the Melbourne CBD office they do not accept appointments for visa applications -- you can mail it in or yes, actually drop it by, and your app goes into queue with all the others. You'll be contacted if they require an interview etc -- and I expect that depends on the thoroughness of your application. My application was approved around 11 weeks after I sent it in, and I never had to go in for an interview. At the Dandenong office (40K southeast of Melbourne) I think they do still take appointments, so it's conceivable -- but by no means a given -- that you could get approved the same day if your application is good and your interview goes well. If you decided to submit to the CBD location, I don't see any problem with going ahead and sending it in now and forwarding the FBI check when you receive it. That way you'll get into the queue.

Good luck!

Hi Jess,

I would go ahead and get your FBI check going, mine took two months including mail time to get to me in Australia. I know that in Sydney they no longer make appointments, the immigration agent that I spoke with suggested sending by registered mail or dropping it off at the local office. Personally, I am going to drop mine off as I would hate for anything to happen to ALL that paperwork going through the mail.

Good Luck with your application, it's kind of a beast to get done but the results will be well worth it!

Do we each need to write our "relationship story" or is one by the both of us enough?
