We were super American on Saturday night, sloppy joes were on the menu. Had to modify a little as one kid wanted nachos, so he had his on tortilla chips, another kid hates nachos, so she had hers on rice. Youngest rug rat opted for rice and dipped her tortilla chips. I also hid some carrots in the mix so I could feel warm and fuzzy (but I would have done that back home as well).

It's a strange feeling to not notice Australian accents, but to nearly burst into laughter when I talk to my BBF from the South on the phone.
:agree:

LOL. I don't think you have to give up one for the other. It's better to be MORE not LESS. Assimulating to a culture and saying tomahto, doesn't mean you're less American. It just means you making it easier to commuicate. I"m a firm believer of "when in Rome."

I wish my accent was LESS American. I would rather not answer questions about where I'm from. I just want to.... be.

I agree totally!

Haven't given up all of things things that make me "American" but I do go along with the "when in Rome" thing. After all; I moved here... not the other way around! I can say boot and chemist and windscreen and tomato sauce instead of ketchup (though I can never bring myself to say tomato like Aussies do... tu MAH toe... I just sound ridiculous!)

There are only a few things I don't say, for some reason I won't say loo. I just won't. I can say "toilet" now instead of bathroom cause I got tired of being laughed at.... lol But I also agree about the accent. Some days I just wish I could lose that good ole Virginia accent, because after you've answered where you're from a million times it gets old. Now that I have my Australian citizenship, and an Aussie asks me if I'm American, I'm just going to say I'm Australian and see if it confuses them.... :rollin:

Oh, that's bad. I just thought to myself 'why would saying windscreen be different?'. Duh - because it's a windshield. I've been dating foreigners too long. :rollin:

I read every page in this thread. It has gotten me all excited about going and experiencing something completely new for a change. Only 3 more months to go!

Being from New England, I say "wicked" a lot ("That's wicked awesome!"), like someone from Boston would say. I can only imagine how ridiculous that will sound to the Aussies. xD

LOL - I used to say wicked a lot too - I grew up in Holyoke MA. Have not heard that in ages!

I often heard "wicked bad", "wicked good", and "wicked awesome" and few others too when I lived in Providence, RI from 1986-90. It almost sounds like "wicket" when said in a New England accent. I never said it myself though.
