This question is more directed to the girls, I am in need of a birth control prescription. I have run out of what I was able to bring with me. Im not a perm. resident yet/dont have insurance. If I go to a doctor will they give me a prescription for it without requiring a pap? Im used to my US doctor that would require one once a year before a prescription would be written, I was just wondering how it worked here. Thanks! |

In my experience over here in Perth, the GP will prescribe birth control without requiring a pap smear. The Australian Government only recommends a pap smear every 2 years, unlike the US. So you've had one within that time frame. I have had to ASK for a pap smear, the GP has never offered to do one. Lisa eta: be prepared though, for a possible different prescription. Not all birth control pills are available here, but the doctor should be able to find one with similar ingredients, if he searches, and it's usually not a problem. I had to have the pelvic exam. Be prepared for it. I don't think it will cost you more for the pap smear anyway. You pay for 15 minutes, and they take like 5? But the script will be cheaper most likely. |

I wasn't a permanent resident yet I was eligible for Medicare because of my bridge visa. Not sure what visa you are here on but you may want to check with Centrelink as you may be eligible... just a thought. |

Another option for you in Melbourne if you aren't on Medicare yet is to go to Family Planning Victoria. They are supposed to be really good...you'll have to go to the Box Hill location. Other states have these Family Planning or Planned Parenthood locations - can be less expensive than a doctor. I'm sure if you explain that you just had a pap smear, they won't force you (don't know for sure though). It is only done every two years in Australia as Lisa said. |
