Employer contacted during immigration process?

I'm trying to land a job with a high tech company moving to my area. It's probably the only shot I have at saving up enough money to move my shop over in 18-24 months. I'm not especially anxious to tell them I'm bugging out in 2 years or less for obvious reasons.
I've tried to play life fair and square, and been honest to a fault too many times to my detriment. This time, I'm looking out for me first...
Besides, I can do a lot of good for them in that time, and have already expressed my willingness to help train and bring up some younger workers, and will probably give at least 30 days notice. I certainly wouldn't be leaving them high and dry.

IF I land the job, at any time during my application and review for immigration, would the employer be contacted by anyone either from the States (FBI, police?) or by anyone from Australian immigration? I might have some issues getting away for things like my physical, and possible interviews, but will have to cross those bridges when I get to them. Just don't want to be let go before I've saved up enough to make the move...

Not on a partner visa, no. If you were doing skilled migrant, possibly.

I came here on the skilled independent visa, and my employer in the States was contacted.

Some do, some don't... no real rhyme or reason why.

cheers

:agree: with Greg.... (and you know I think a Spouse/Partner visa is best in your situation): No worries, not a problem. ;) :hugs:

An employer wouldn't hesitate to hire you, knowing a re-organization was possibly two years down the track - and they would not feel an obligation to tell you that up front, so why on earth should you tell them details of your personal aspirations? Not to be pessimistic (simply philosophical), but the future is really just a dream...the present is the only reality...deal with the reality of informing your employer when it arrives.

The only hard part will be not yapping on about it to your co-workers!

Well I told them I'm married to an Aussie and set to retire there before I'm 60. (didn't say how much before 60 tho...) One of my concerns was vacation, and they sure are skimpy on that, one week/yr for the first 5 years. Not sure yet if I'd be able to get a 2nd week without pay, which I'm more than willing to do. But the reaction when I asked about a 2nd week in the first year told me there would be no chance without a darn good reason, thus I told them that I spend 2 weeks a year minimum down under with family. The guy that interviewed me didn't seem concerned about any of that. On the face of what I was telling, the assumption was I could easily be there 6 years and that's a decent stay these days.

It's just that if I'm actually working there and they find out I've filed papers for immigration, they might kneejerk and toss me out before -I- am ready... I have no intention of volunteering such info until I'm well on my way and know for a fact that I'm approved.

A funny aside, last year I got a job offer from a local shop. That was a sweatshop with not only one bare week total vacation, PERIOD, no matter how long one worked there, it was always the first week of July, PERIOD.
I wasn't going to say anything about Danni, but at that, I had to ask if there was any chance I could put in OT and comp it at straight time toward a 2nd week off. He got real wormy and wanted to know why I needed 2 weeks off, so I told him. Turned out, he'd hired a Jon a year before, who went and married a gal in Australia, and then left!
Ended up turning that job down, it was not nice work and the owner was a quirky control freak. But it woulda been kinda funny from my perspective if I more or less repeated the story!

Glad I didn't spend long working in the US. We all get at least 4 weeks of vacation a year here unless you're a contractor. :)

That's what Danni's told me. Blows me away. I've never ever had more than 2 weeks paid vacation working for someone else. And few if any employers seem interested in giving anyone time off without pay. That's the one big sacrifice I'll be making if I get the job, I won't be able to take off whenever I want anymore. Not sure if they'll give me time off without pay so I can spend 2 weeks there next April. Soon as Danni's bought her tickets here, I'm buying mine if I don't have the job yet. Then I'll just inform them they can either buy my tickets or give me the 2 weeks off without pay. But since it's about the only way I can get my shop there, going to have to take it if I get another offer.

Oh, yeah, I turned them down twice because when I tried to figure an hourly wage that equaled what I'm making on my own, I came up with almost $24/hr and they offered $17.5, then $18. Finally figured out I was figuring too high for withholding. $18/hr just about equals what I'm earning in my garage, and it'd be a steady paycheck. With my business on the side, I can to save the $$ I need.

That's something else that sucks here. 35 years experience in my trade and I struggle to find a job I can just survive on. Bit over 18 months ago when it looked like I was going to fold up, a friend of Danni's relayed that her husband would hire me on with his tree cutting business at $18.5 or so. I can make more there as a rank novice tree cutter, than I can here with all my skills...
