Just wondering if anyone has found good rates for shipping small packages to the US. I checked Australia Post, UPS, and DHL and for a 1K small box it was $40-50. Maybe this is normal.

Thank you!

yup, that's about what I pay everytime I send a care package back to the States.
They are usually the same size box, weight may vary a little (1-2 lbs), but the price is usually between $40 and $50. And yet I could send a 50lb box from the States to here for the same price!!!! and people here wonder why after 2 years I'm STILL in price shock!!!

:( Guess I won't be shipping unless it's important.

I have found - without exception - that shipping has always cost me more than the item I am shipping!

yeah :( I sent Christmas and birthday packages for my grandkids till I figured that out. $60 for a little pink pair of ugg boots put me over the edge.

It's normal if you ship Express Post... But, if you plan ahead, you can use the sea rates and send a 1kg package to the States for $19.50. Oddly enough, even Air mail is only $28.

Sea rates, BTW, don't always mean it goes by sea. But even if it does, I've never had a package in transit for more than 6 weeks.

Think ahead.. Don't pay extra just for the convenience of getting your package out next day from the Oz backwaters..

actually shipping from the states has gone up in the past few years, at least through USPS. especially since they no longer offer sea mail and you have to send it priority mail. a 2lb package will cost you $32.35 from the US to ship to Australia. 50lbs would cost $287  either way your shipping it is pretty costly. that's why i buy present from US stores online and have them shipped to family over there :) but it is fun to send family and friends cool things from downunder too, it just costs a bit more!

I just shipped some boxes from TX to QLD. 20lb weight limit in a LARGE priority box (large is 12x12x5.5) was approx $56.00 a box for postage- I believe it was.

So all the things I got at such a good price back home weren't such a good deal afterall. I won't make that mistake again next time I go home. I'll only bring back the luggage next time.

Yep, USPS uses FLAT RATE BOXES now. I just sent off a "large" box ... was pretty small to me :P
Max 20 lb for International shipping = $56

It's much more cost effective if you pay for extra luggage fees to the airline when travelling back to Oz.
Max 50 lbs extra baggage fee = $100
Whenever I come back to the States, I'm taking empty suitcases and buying everything while Stateside hehehe

Be careful if you have any connecting flights within Australia! Domestic carriers charge $10 per extra kilo. I think there's leeway if you book it all at once, depending on the carrier, but it's still something to watch out for.

Re: flat rate boxes - I didn't bring a whole lot with me from the US, and I'm glad I just used flat rate boxes to mail over books. Books are heavy!

$10/kg ?? Yikes. Good info to know, that's for sure.

I keep forgetting about connecting flights bc my flight is pretty direct. Thanks for the heads up :goodonya:

I'm with you on the extra baggage. I know this is somewhat pathetic as we've only been here for a few months, but my husband is going to the states on business in a few weeks and is bringing back 3 suitcases. I hope everything I've ordered fits : ) So many things we need (really, I promise) and a few extras like chocolate chips, marshmallows, and running shoes for the next few years

when flying international you are allowed the same baggage allowance once you are back in australia provided your connecting flight was booked with the international flight. we take empty bags with us to the states and fill them up! lol! our last trip resulted in 10 bags (we have 3 kids) filled to nearly the max weight! we have done that a few times now and have never had to pay for baggage. if you fly qantas you can use frequent flyer miles to pay to for excess baggage in advance:)

Yeah shipping gets really pricey from the states, 4lbs is the magic number its about $30us, for 3.99lbs, but if it goes over 4lbs it doubles, which is when its time to get a flat rate box, if necessary. I am trying to get my book collection over to Australia, both A and I are big readers, and most of my books I got really cheap at library sales and used book dealers. I am having friends each mail me one book, or at least thats the plan, we will see. that way i get lots of mail. hehehe.
