I'm highly addicted to flat whites. Is there anywhere in the USA to get it? Or is there another term used in the US for the same thing?

Also - if I wanted the typical USA type coffee with milk and sugar (coffee but no espresso) how would you ask for it in Australia?

I work in a small coffee bar, and we only offer espresso - you might want to check neighborhood cafes, though.

A flat white is similar to a "wet" cappuccino (as opposed to "dry"=foamy milk)

An Americano or long black is espresso diluted with hot water, closer to American coffee.

I wasn't aware of all the names for coffee, can anyone post a list. I went to a restaurant in Melbourne and ordered coffee, and they asked me what kind, I just said plain coffee, and they said "oh a long black?"
"sure!"
I was not prepared. But I love espresso, so I was fine with it.

It takes a bit of getting used to. :) 'Coffee' here is a general term to describe any coffee drink, not just a brewed coffee (which you won't generally find here -- all coffee drinks are made with espresso). So if you order 'coffee' you'll be asked what kind. Here are the basics:

Short Black - a shot of espresso in an espresso cup.
Long Black - a shot of espresso mixed with half a cup of hot water.
Flat White - a shot or two of espresso with steamed milk and no froth in a regular cup.

These, along with the other regulars like cappuccino, cafe latte, mocha latte, and macchiato can be ordered at any place that serves coffee.

Ordering a latte with no foam should get you a 'flat white' in the US.

Short black = an espresso shot, long black = americano.

I have seen brewed coffee at Starbucks before, but it's not common at all.

the sad part is, I worked in a coffee shop and I made some of these drinks, I just didn't know they all had names. We usually named them after the customers that specially requested them. There was one guy that wanted and extra extra dry cappuccino, it almost felt like it had wings, we just called it the "Ted". Once you have something you like it's hard to go back, and equally hard to train a barista who doesn't know how to make your drink, how to do it proper, without appearing like a stuck up coffee snob.
